It's so nerve wrecking though... It's hard to enjoy sometimes...
That playoff game in 87' Islanders/Caps 4 OT's was unreal. The "Easter Epic". I didn't care who won the game, so I just sat back and enjoyed the hell out of that game.

I don't think it would ever happen. That Flyers/Pens 5 OT game was one of my favorite games ever. There is nothing like overtime in playoff hockey. The drama is so thick you can cut it with a knife. The NHL knows better to try and screw with that. - PLindbergh31
Part of it is not understanding the flow of the game. How many people sit there and scream "SHOOT" for two minutes when there's a power play?
I don't like the NBA, used to love college hoops until every good player was gone after a year or two at most. The NFL often bores me to tears, but it's a great sport for TV. Plenty of built in breaks for review and analysis.
I like baseball because I like the strategic thinking of it. - Jsaquella

the best part of the game, aside from the goalie battle between kelly hrudey and bob mason, was that doc and clement wore their ties around their heads during one of the OT intermissions. i was howling.

Look at the Flyers-Caps game, or the Flyers-Panthers game. In both cases, the team the Flyers was playing was so desperate for standings points, that they played not to lose. Worked for the Cats, but not the Caps.
Neither game was exciting, though, was it? - Jsaquella
They had their moments. Bit there were long periods where i felt i could sleep and i wouldnt even miss a good scoring chance.

all of this talk about the SO and it does beg the comparison to soccer (football). the penalty kick has been long used to end games and it's apparently the most popular game in the world. the goalie is mostly helpless in this scenario but they don't have any better ideas either, and this after 90 minutes of regulation play, a random amount of injury stoppage extra time, and i think an OT in some situations/leagues - and the score is most likely 0-0 at that stage.
Their infield is going to look like a D3 college teams at the start of the year. If they can make it through the first 2 months they'll be okay - fecondo
I think so. Although I'm concerned Utley might be cooked.
One argument for being ok with things settled in a shootout is that, your team had 65 real minutes to score more goals than the other team. If you don't want your fate decided in a shootout, play better and win the game in those 65 minutes. If you don't, you just have to take your chances with the shootout and move on. Your team probably had ample opportunities to win without it.
That said, I'd like to see the switch to 10 minutes of 4v4 and maybe ties brought back if there's no winner then. I don't want to see teams with 15/82 games without a winner. The hardcore fans may not mind, but casual fans probably don't like it. The NHL needs the money from casual fans as much as from hardcore fans.
