well hopefully one day im lucky enough to witness that - fecondo
I wish I had been prepared with a recording device the couple of times I've witnessed them, although the transcription process would have been hindered by the uncontrollable laughter.

If it ever happens, I stop watching the NHL. - Jsaquella
I don't think it would ever happen. That Flyers/Pens 5 OT game was one of my favorite games ever. There is nothing like overtime in playoff hockey. The drama is so thick you can cut it with a knife. The NHL knows better to try and screw with that. |

What, exactly, is the negative with a tie? Ties were around for 100 years in the NHL and it's predecessor leagues, and never were an issue. Hell there's still ties, but now teams that tie have a chance to earn a bogus bonus point for winning a skills competition.
Yes, there can be exciting moments in a shootout. It's not the shootout that is the issue. It's that they use it to decide the outcome of games with something that eliminates 99% of the game. - Jsaquella
For me, nothing. But when fans go to a game, they want to see a winner. Whether it's a skills competition or whatever. The shootout is good for the game and good for the NHL. |

Probably the most exciting sport when a game reaches overtime (playoffs). |

Ending a hockey game in a shootout is like ending a baseball game with a home run derby. It just doesnt make sense to me. Every other sport plays the game until someone wins, or in footballs case the rare tie. - fecondo
Agreed, but you can't have sudden death in the regular season. That isn't feasible. I think 4 on 4 for 10 mins is about the best and most simple solution. I don't think there would be an inordinate amount of ties using that format. |

The NFL has tie games. Granted there's far fewer ties in the NFL than in hockey, but I think that going to a 10 minute 4 on 4 OT and eliminating points except for wins would go a long way to limiting ties.
Teams wouldn't be sitting back and playing for a tie or shootout if there was no reward for them. - Jsaquella
Especially at the end of the season when everyone is fighting for extra points. Imo that would make for better hockey than what we have right now. |

I can live with it in the regular season, as long as it never becomes part of the post season (which I'm confident it won't). I'd really like to see that loser point eliminated, though. |

I disagree that it's good for the game or the NHL. If fans simply need to see a winner, then seeing a kid win the "What cup is the logo under game" should suffice.
I just have trouble agreeing that deciding the winner of a game without playing the same sport that was played for 65 minutes is a good idea, regardless of the entertainment value. I'd be more open to agreement if the points system was tweaked to lessen the weight of a shootout or even OT win. |

I agree with that. I wasn't trying to say i wanted it to be sudden death all season long. But you have to keep that in place for the playoffs. Theres nothing better imo |

Look at the Flyers-Caps game, or the Flyers-Panthers game. In both cases, the team the Flyers was playing was so desperate for standings points, that they played not to lose. Worked for the Cats, but not the Caps.
Neither game was exciting, though, was it? |

I honestly don't understand how people don't like hockey. It has pretty much everything in the game. Its fast paced with lots of action.

No question about it. Nothing more exciting than playoff OT hockey. It's edge of your seat stuff every second. |

I guess the Phils made a wise decision not bringing back Ryan Madson. Good lord, tough break for him.
The Phils opening day infield will include the likes of Ty Wigginton, and Pete Orr. |

There isn't ever going to be anything other then to keep playing OT 5 on 5 until someone scores a goal, that won't have any negatives to it. For obvious reasons that just can't happen over an 82 game Season. Does anyone turn off the game and not watch when it goes to a shootout? I watch with excitement. Seeing moves like the one Giroux made recently is exciting. - MJL
if they devised some other method - like bank shots off the side boards into an empty net or other ridiculous idea - people would watch that too, simply because it's the final act to determine the winner, not that it is, in and of itself, exciting. |

The problem I have is, it decides the game without playing the game. To me, regardless of it's excitement level or anything else, you're choosing a winner and loser based on something other than playing the sport.
If I want to watch shootouts, I'll go on youtube and find old episodes of NHL Showdown. - Jsaquella

Part of it is not understanding the flow of the game. How many people sit there and scream "SHOOT" for two minutes when there's a power play?
I don't like the NBA, used to love college hoops until every good player was gone after a year or two at most. The NFL often bores me to tears, but it's a great sport for TV. Plenty of built in breaks for review and analysis.
I like baseball because I like the strategic thinking of it. |
