no.. b/c DP never did anything wrong. He got injured... kept trying to rehab and got injured again... 5 or 6 surgeries later he was still trying to come back. He killed the islanders but unlike Kasperko I can't hate the man for injuries and the Islanders would never do anything that disrespectful to a guy who was the face of the franchise for a while.
- niteislander

I think you can still trade in an Islanders Kirk Muller jersey for ANYTHING in the Islanders store.

Good point about DP. All his haters on this site, probably chanted his name in the Coli at one time....long ago as it was....I can't hate him for getting injured and trying to come back. Montoya, who was never as good as Rick was, gets sympathy from so many for trying and not being good enuf, tho some here thought he was the sh*t not too long ago. You know who you are... It's hypocritical.

Love this line from Staple's Newsday article today:

"But Snow's goal is to have Nabokov teamed with either Anders Nilsson or Kevin Poulin (or a mix of the two as call-ups from Bridgeport) to give the Islanders some stability in net."

Hopefully that's true.

- PeteM

It's kinda telling that Staple would report. The Isles are usually so protective and secretive about DP, telling Staple that is what he wants his goaltending situation to be shows that in his mind, DP is not part of it.

Yeah that first shoot out goal against montreal dictated the rest of his career
- Danformo

I like Montoya too and if we didn't have 3 good goalie prospects, he would probably be resigned. As well as he played at times last year, he also gave up a million softies and a ton of goals from the point. I hope he gets another chance at an NHL contract somewhere. He seems like a great guy who cares deeply but as someone said, if Nabby plays like a true number 1 and punches babies, I might be ok with that.

I really don't think 44 goals and 70 pts in 55 games is too shabby, add to that 27 points in 21 playoff games. Add to that playing in a more physical league than the OHL, I believe thats where alot of the "lack of competition" comments were coming from that I read at least. I remember hearing "a man playing amongst boys" on a few different occaisions. Its not relevant, he would've been better served playing in juniors then the way he was utilized by Snow/Capuano.
- Cptmjl

The worst part of this is that around the trade deadline, they could of sent him down for the rest of the season and playoffs. No point especially now letting him play games that don't matter.

Jeff Carter was there for about 5 months. DP has been an Islander for 12 years. has played over 300 games and did not always stink no matter what Kasperk thinks and says.
- niteislander

He was never an elite goalie. He was very inconsistent and had 2 nice runs. The 2nd half of the 04 season and the first half of the 06-07 season. Besides that, he was no better than average and he has been the worst goalie in the league since.

About 6 years ago, I was out in huntington village at a bar and watched DP and Komisarek (summer time) trade slaps to each others face. I knew it then that this guy was a complete idiot. I don't hate him per say, but everything about him being an Islander set this team back 12 years. milbury even traded Osgood so this idiot could play.

the Isles will not take a step forward until he is out of here.

The "DiPietro out at the bar" stories here have been top notch. My favorite is still the "Ricky D don't want no problems" one.

They make me laugh as well.. because a bar is the perfect place to see anyone acting like an upstanding citizen.

His numbers were not even tops on his team, let alone the WHL. 70 points in 55 games. Very good, but it's not like he was shattering records down there. Just to put it in context, if he put up 70 points on this year's Portland Winterhawks team, he'd be fourth behind Rattie (121 points), Bartschi (94) and Ross (82).

Last season, his 70 points did not crack the top 20 scorers in the WHL. In fact, not the top 40 either, as he was 43rd. And Isles' 2011 5th round draft pick Brenden Kichton, a defenseman, put up more points than Nino last year (81).

In fairness, a lot of players on the scoring chart played mid-60s games rather than mid-50s like Nino since he did the nine-game NHL stint, but my point stands...the guy only played two seasons of hockey in North America before the Isles decided he had "nothing left to learn" (or that they needed his $3m cap hit to reach the floor...). I don't think I'm alone in thinking he still could have learned a thing or two in juniors playing major minutes. Certainly he could have worked on his skating and defensive game down there, since they were definitely not NHL-ready this year.

Edit -- just one more thing to point out. Josh Bailey, who everyone agrees should have went back to juniors after he was drafted, put up 96 points in his last year at Windsor.

- UIF

Yeah, I know about Bailey. He scored I think 6 points less than Stamkos if I remember correctly? I hear you with the points factor but I think between his points total and his PHYSICAL play is where most of the crap I read pointed out he was done. Most of us can only go on what we read and anything I read on the kid said he was done with juniors so thats all I can go on. Now, th other thing. My point and what has always been my point on this subject was to give the kid an ample chance to succeed. If he was'nt ready or rather on the "cusp" of being rady all the more reason to play him on a line with decent players, players who actually score even occaisionally and maybe give him more minutes to try and succeed. I get the whole earn your plying time and I agree with it but come on, anyone who thinks this kid was given any oppurtunity to succeed on this team has their own head stuffed up their own asses. He was'nt, whether he was ready or not we'll never know as far as I'm concerned. I only hope he turns out to what he was projected to be bcs God knows the Islanders desperately need it!

Thing is the team does not want his salary off the books, they NEED it on the books.

And yes he can be sent through waivers down to Bridgeport, but regardless he will be in camp, he will be trying out for a spot on the roster. (unless he retires)

Knowing our jackass/circus of a team he wont' have to try out, he will be given a spot

I was referring to DP, which you know already! Carter, though I won't refer to him as elite had 47 goals I think one year and I think 3 thirty goal seasons to his name? I would'nt even use DP's name in the same sentence. DP has NOTHING on his resume that would put him in elite status and please, I beg you don't throw out the Allstar game reference when he was an alternate. The guy had problems with injuries, it sucks but to say he was elite or was a sure thing going to be elite is beyond reaching.

But no one here mentioned the word "elite"....... you did.
You are always the only one that brings up the word elite when DP is concerned... NO ONE is arguing that he wasnt an elite goalie.

i agree with everything you said about him being the odd man out and the isles need to be more physical but than you say if he signs for a reasonable amount than he is a perfect fit? i dont get it....
- LetsGoIsles

What I was trying to say although not clearly because i was multi tasking, is that PA is not a priority to me to re sign. The money that it would take to re sign him to me is not worth it. If they could sign him for cheap then i would do it, but i was saying that they already have enough soft players, so PA shouldnt be the priority. We've all read this story before..........PA, like Jason Blake did, like Adrian Aucoin did, like Andy Sutton did etc etc etc is going to go to the highest bidder. SOOOOO i say fare well. Its time this team changes its make up anyway. Finesse alone does not win championships.

Actually I don't remember saying elite at ealier times and the only reason I did in this thread was because of an earlier post from someone else. If I ever referred to him as such it was due to someone posting it, not myself. I have no idea where you get that I always refer to DP as elite? Alot on here wouldd argue that he was an "allstar" goaltender and was a great goaltender. You being one of the posters I am referring too.
