I've had this argument too many times to count now, but if you truly believe that way, then do me a favour.

Go and take a look at the Toronto Marlies the day that Burke took over.

Now go ahead and look at them now. How much better off is it now?

Also, to bring back this point:

Lets go through it shall we? Bolded is the one i'd rather have

Kessel - Seguin
Lupul - Poni
Liles - White
Franson - Beauchemin
Komi - Lebda (tie, both lose)
Mac - Hagman
Colborne - Stajan
Brown - Mayers
Gardiner - Kaberle

I could keep going...

As for position, there is no instant fix.. There is however patience needed

You've got to consider the variable of time. Assume that a the Leafs are run by a "Dippy Bird" (like the one that pressed the button for Homer Simpson in the episode when he took disability due to obesity). Well that Dippy will simply do the obvious every time ...like use its draft pick to select the next guy on the list. The team should get better and improve ...by mere default ...so you can't compare the 08' roster to the 12' roster to justify an improvement.

If BB doesn't fix things this summer ...we hire the dippy bird.

Think of a combination of Sloth and the dude from the original Hills Have Eyes. Now put a Habs sweater on him and give him a hockey stick.

The bolded is the trouble with your post.

Why isn't Columbus a cup champion by now then?

There are way more things that you have to consider.

There is more to being the GM than looking after the Leafs.

Look at the Marlies, they look like a Calder Cup contender. That is progress! It's difficult to stock both your AHL and NHL club at the same time. Usually one must suffer for the other to improve. At the moment it is clear which way it will happen.

Look at Ottawa, their AHL team won it all last year and made the transition to the big leagues. Where are they now? In the playoffs

I'd take sloth over Tyler Bozak. At least sloth would go stand in front of the net if you told him too

Smith beat out Wayne Gretzky (182 points) for the 1977–78 OMJHL scoring title

Gretzky only played 20 games, so that stat is a bit misleading.

You're right ...there are a lot of things to consider ....which is why a snapshot of the roster doesn't show the whole picture.

You can't pick an exception to the rule and present that as a counter argument.

All teams that have won the cup in the past 5 years and probably even further back have done so on top 5 draft picks. Blackhawks, Penguins, Ducks. Name me a team that has won the cup with this "rebuild on the fly" mentality. All it's gonna do is guarantee our mediocrity for years to come. We still have 0 franchise players to build around after 4 years of Burke. We have some decent prospects and good younger guys but still, you need the Getzlafs, you need the Crosbys, you need the Towes. You don't get those by trading them away. You know w ho our Crosby, Towes and Getzlaf was suppose to be? Tyler Seguin and what did we do?

Gave him away for a complimentary goal scorer.

Awesome

not so true.. boston won the cup primarily with guys drafted outside the top 5

you could argue seguin but other than a couple good games he wasnt the reason they won the cup, thomas was.. who was a 9th round draft pick of the nordiques

Problem this summer is besides the draft what can Burkie do as far as UFAs.

Parise will be the big catch that a lot of teams will go after. I really think Burkie needs to land him in a bad way. If he can't then he shouldn't be GM anymore.

Hudler would bring good experience and maybe more production in a more prominent role. But with slim pickings available he is still young and will be sought after.

Semin we already have that type of player in Kessel.

Maybe David Jones but is he for real?

Goalies there is nothing to write home about. Maybe Vokoun for a proven stop gap and Harding would be a nice pick up but he is also unproven and we've been down that road before.

For dmen I would go hard after Suter even if we are loaded at D. Sign Suter and then we have dmen we can now part with like Gunnarson or even Phaneuf in order to strengthen other areas.

Either way, the only sure fire UFAs are going to be highly sought after and since he has already landed none while being a GM here then I would say if Burkie doesn't hit a home run this offseason then get rid of him because he is showing an inability to bring in top players.
