I'm not sure people were awaiting a star player as much as just hoping he'd fill the obvious and very gaping hole in net.

Bryan Murray fixed his goaltending problem within 48 hours of it arriving.

Rick Nash - Last 3 years = 181 points
Phil Kessel - Last 3 years = 195 points

And....

- leafs_wingp

Yea it's easy to skew the numbers when one player is having a career year this season and the other is having an off year. Why don't you include the year before and leave out this season? That would skew it the other way....Fact is you don't actually believe Phill Kessel (at the same amount of money) is better than Rick Nash... and if you do than you my friend are a retarded person.

It really was the catalyst for that crazy September choke. I'm with Texas now, a christian minister used as a spiritual advisor to Josh Hamilton (gotta keep him off the booze).
- 1979AD

I'll say it was a catalyst, it happened on the second last day of the season and put the Tigers ahead for the first time.

Then the final game Jimmy Key allows 1 ball out of the infield the entire game and it is Herndon's home run and Jays lose 1-0 and Tigers are in the playoffs.

I did take pleasure in watching the Twins kick their ass though.

Fair enough, just irks me when fans raise their arms in protest like "why didn't Burke do anything at the trade deadline!?!?!!?" Like elite players were there for the taking Burke is a good GM but he can't use the force

*waves hand* "you will trade me Lupul & Gardiner for Lebda..."

...maybe he can?

- Boosinicka

My problem is that he didn't see this team for what it was and ship out whatever he could and take on cap space and draft picks. In fact, Brian Burke has NEVER seen this team for what it is, unfortunately.

Did he? Oh wait thats right its the Senators and not the Leafs so Bishop has to be the real deal for sure.

Well, they were (frank)ed and tried to fix the situation without selling the farm.

So far, he's putting decent numbers. Will it last? Nobody knows...

I think his rebuild has definitely been flawed.

But the real problem goes back further. We could not get real prospects for our top tier players back when Sundin, Kaberle, McCabe, etc all refused to waive their no trades.

Any other team who can move those types of players for sure gets some type of quality picks or prospects moving forward.

We had to restart our rebuild from literally ground zero like an expansion team does.

I agree. Bishop should have been targeted by the Leafs given their goaltending circumstances for depth purposes.

After the 1st ten games of the season, I think Kessel was on pace for over 130 goals...

Blame the GM for giving them no trade clauses not the player for not waiving them.

I'm not interested in apologies. You don't begin a rebuild by trading two firsts and a second for a player of Kessel's makeup. Period.

Of course I don't.

But this conversation started with Leaf fans complaining about how Kessel was just a complimentary player.

Yet no one says that about Giroux, who is also having a career year, plays on a better team, with better teammates, and is the same age.

I watch the Flyers regularly. Giroux back-checks just as hard as Kessel.

Yep and basically Burke still had faith. If it were up to the fans I am sure we would have got a goaltender at the deadline.
