Surely you aren't saying Montreal is in better shape than the Leafs?
- thomas81

Probably not.

But are they in worse shape?

They aren't in worse shape except for maybe a slightly worse cap situation.

a little extra help?
- Pecafan Fan

Yes. Did you watch the Leafs prior to January?

If so, you must be able to see that this team isn't such a disaster as people are saying.

Our defense has faltered in the past month or two but getting Schenn and to a limit Gardiner back to their former self will make this defense above average. Getting Reimer back to the above average goaltending is important. I think he'll bounce back next season. He was great last year and before Gionta injured him.

Our offense needs help. We need a strong top 6 winger and in a perfect world, a top centerman. Those are hard to get but I believe Burke will work hard to trade for one.

If they draft Nail or Grigerenko you could argue they are.

Carey Price is the reason.

That 's exactly it.

When everyone elevated their game after the all star break, the Leafs have had the worst record in the entire league.
Yes, even worse than Montreal.

Edit: Have you seen the Minnesota Wild before January?

Leafs need a #1 goalie, a #1 centre and a #1 d-man.

The hardest pieces to acquire.

Yes but...

Desharnais
Paccioretty
Plekanec
Subban
Price
Eller

Kessel
Lupul
Grabovski
Phaneuf
Gardiner
MacArthur

... there is not a lot to pick and choose there. The slight edge to the Leafs maybe IF you eliminate Price. The fact is, the goalie is so important that Price actually gives the Habs a more solid group as listed.

Montreal has Carey Price

Toronto has Reimer.

One's an allstar...the other just sucks

I'm not sure if I should even reply to this but hell, I'll give it a shot.

Do the Habs even have any prospects? Beaulieu is supposed to be their best but from what I've seen, he'll be a third pairing defenseman at best.

Gallagher is too small. He'd be useless as a third or fourth line forward and I can't see him being effective as a top 6 forward. We saw that at the WJC.

LeBlanc is decent. He'll be an effective third line center as he's extremely smart. He doesn't have the offensive upside though.

Our prospect pool is so much more deeper. Ask Huddle or people who analyze prospects.

Just more magnified, nationally anyways, in TO because of Burke.

Really. I didn't even notice Bozak. Thought he wasn't playing, that's how much he stood out.

I watched the game, he played well. You probably didn't notice him because you were watching the Pens game.

The Leafs need to be more of a puck possession team. People point at the dmen but truth is the puck is in our end in the other teams possession too much.

If we get more puck possession and a true #1 goalie then noboby will mention the dmen.

With Wilson we were too run and gun offense making low percentage plays and turning the puck over basically losing possession.

With Carlyle, hopefully with the trap system, the Leafs will have to be more of a possession team because the run and gun will not be as available as it was before. When they get the puck they will need to make the most of their passes and limit give aways.

I've actually always liked former 1st rounders who don't pan out for 3rd or 4th line roles. Even though they can't produce offense they still have pretty good stickhandling and puck possesion. Not just chip and chase.

First of all, Huddle is a Leafs guy, so his opinion will be biased.

Second, I would probably give the Leafs the edge in prospects but I am not knowledgeable enough about Montreal's system.

The bottom line is that neither prospect pool has any up and coming superstars. There may be 1 or 2 very good NHLers on either side... and that is the high end.

Prospects don't mean poop until they accomplish anything at the NHL level.
I don't care if the Marlies have a good team. The leafs aren't any better for it.

The Bulldogs won the Calder Cup not too long ago. And look at the habs now...

Denial. He's absolutely correct. You're fooling yourself if you think a couple minor additions fixes anything.

Goaltending is the key.
Montreal could easily turn it around if Price gets hot and they get a legit scorer.
