Both turned out to be solid NHL players. - imsorry66
Not "bad" picks, but not "home runs" which you really need to hit in the top 5.
There are not nearly as many top 5 misses now as their used to be. I think the younger players are bigger, stronger, better prepared and coached and it takes away *some* of the guessing game.
I think if I was a scout I would be looking at size, speed, mental toughness and grit over scoring touch and points...

The best you can HOPE for from a top 3 pick is for someone like Getzlaf
Therefore, you give up the HOPE plus a Colborne, who is also HOPE, plus a useful plug like Kuli
Do that deal every single day
I will always take the sure thing over HOPE - faceto27
i doubt ANA is gonna take a high 1st round pick, a B level prospect and a winger who can't score goals for their star center.
ANA would ask for the leafs gave up in the kessel deal, at least.
...and that's my point. they're better off to just draft the next 'getzlaf' than sell the farm to acquire one (at this point!). if the leafs had a team that was 1 impact player away, sure, you don't pass up on a player as talented as getzlaf. but they're not. the leafs are a rebuilding team who's GM refuses to admit and follow through with it. |

For all the advocates of tanking and retanking to get high draft pics
The Leafs in the 80's had a top 7 pick each and EVERY single year that decade, including a first overall and two 3rd overall picks
The draft is no sure fire way to build......... you need to get lucky too - faceto27
Drafting has improved.. I dont think you can use draft 25-30 years ago as examples... maybe in the past 10-15 tops. See who are the top 5 picks... a high % shot at being a great player

Pacioretty was a solid pick as well. - Pecafan Fan
Where was he picked.
I would say he would be an average top 10, a good 10-20 pick, a very good 20-30 pick and an excellent pick later than that...

Just use the (frank)ing draft pick to draft a center !!!
Gally, Grig's Gaunce just (frank)ing pick one and wait it out. We have more problems than just a center so save our trades for a goalie etc... |

Carlyle is worse than Wilson IMO. He's killing the one thing the Leafs had going for them, which was offense. Now, they have no offense, to go along with bad defense and average (?) goaltending.
Hope he gets fired. - TheSabresTaco

I still think my prediction is better.
The Leafs get in a bidding war for for Parise's negotiating rights. They end up winning and giving up their 1st to New Jersey.
Parise signs with the Habs after July 1.
THAT is a typical Leafs scenario.
They are quite possibly the most incompetent and snakebitten organization in pro sports. Everything the Leafs touch turns to sh1t. - GoneFullRetard

So yeah, I would say that makes him a "very good" pick, which I think is a fair assessment. |

this.
I don't think it would be hard to trade up with the Oilers. Say we're picking 4th-6th, Franson + a later round pick could get us there. I don't see the Oilers being upset with Franson & Dumba/Trouba/Reinhart in the 1st round. They get a very good prospect and someone ready to step in.
Thoughts?
I just hope we keep our 2nd rounder too, drafting a goalie in Vasilevski
or Dansk would be sick. |

It will take more than a RFA bottom pairing D-man and a late pick to move up....The Oilers wont move out of that draft position.. |

This is the only one I will accept. Rumour has it he will go at the end of the 1st round though. |

Yes, thats what should happen... but the Leafs will probably win if they get too close to that top 3 spot. |

I don't see any wins, NJ is battling for playoff position with Ottawa and maybe a couple other teams, The Rangers trying to hold off Pitts and Philly for 1st in that division.
Philly is battling for top spot or 4th spot with pitts. Carolina is looking to play spoiler and hopefully they win tonight to increase there lead on us to 3 points so we just need to lose against them.
And Buffalo is battling for 8th spot, possibly 7th spot if Ottawa keeps losing. |

I wouldn't be surprised if they did, a lot of buzz in the city about trying to acquire Franson previously, and this city is absolutely in love with Reinhart. |
