Until the rest of his career transpires, you can't offer his career being over as fact. This amnesty isn't fact, either. The only basis for it is that some guys somewhere said that it's be a good idea for some reason. Do you think the NHLPA is going to be ok with giving thirty of its members the shaft? Let's not forget, they have the leverage of refusing the realignment the NHL wants. So again, this amnesty option is PURELY supposition.

He's had one bad season, assuming this continues through to the offseason. Let's leave the unnecessary name value of Scott Gomez out of this and focus on the fact at hand: Danny Briere is a highly paid player on the Flyers with a big salary contract, three more seasons, and a NMC (given the factors, expect him to be a Flyer next season), and he's had a poor season. Nothing beyond that is a given.

- BulliesPhan87

Amnesty was a reality in the past, it's not a pipe dream to think it can't exist again.

How much longer does he get a pass for not performing then from you? His pass is already burnt up from me. He has no excuse to not perform. Your highest paid player needs to perform that is the bottom line.

Believe it or not Joe, he is on pace for 44 points in 72 games. His previous worst season as a Flyer was in 08-09 where he played 75 games and got 53 points. He could have a good end to the season and match that total.

So I think your announcing the end of his career is pretty ridiculous.

- feelingkettle

and you find that acceptable at 6.5 million?

If you look at his contract numbers, Briere should be better. If Giroux has 90 points, Briere should have 180.

Oh my gaude.

Overpaid players are a reality. common really. almost every team has at least one. if they perform badly they're untradeable, so all there really is to do is just accept what they do well and hope they play better.

He shouldn't have 180 that's obviously ridiculous but he should be a lot closer than 44.

A guy who is usually a 60-70 something point player and money in the playoffs is having a down year when he had a concussion and less than ideal wingers. I don't really get angry about it, but maybe he slapped your dog or something. I dont' know.

I said usually. Obviously he is not this year. I and most people would call that an off year. I'm not concerned because that's not his usual stat line.

Apparently you think his career is over.

Wait, so the amnesty occurring ONCE after a drastic change to the CBA (the institution of the salary cap) is historical basis enough to believe that, against ALL LOGIC (logic you didn't bother to address), there will be one again. The historical basis of Briere CONSISTENTLY providing in the playoffs isn't valid, though? I'm sorry, but this is just plain ridiculous in my mind.

You're putting words in my mouth with this "giving a pass" nonsense. I've flat out said he's been bad. It's been a bad season, and there's no guarantee he'll have a better postseason. All I've said is that it's not impossible for him to turn around a bad regular season to have a good postseason. Scott Hartnell would probably agree it's possible; and that the suggestion that Briere's career is over is also purely supposition, until he's played his last game and the numbers are at last tallied.

This isn't about excuses, this isn't about giving passes. This is about execution and results, both of which have not been good for Briere at all this season. The only thing that can be done is for him to get on the ice and try to be better, because there's virtually NO chance that he's leaving the Flyers anytime soon. As a fan of the Flyers and of Briere, the only reasonable course of action for me is to hope he can be better, and to root for my team.

He's an average 42 point a year player, so no he isn't even usually that. If you don't count the rookie season but still lump in the points he's only a 48 point a year guy.
