Meh Gainey has a lot less to do with the day to day or even over all strategy than people think.

He did use Gomez less than JM and the forecheck did seem to pick up from none under JM to some. I agree though he's been wishy washy and its hard to figure just what his system or plan is.

There's really only one person that can make that decision and its Molson. Whether he does it or not will be interesting to see. If ever there was a year to do it, this is the one.

I think he speaks with Molson and sits inon some meetings etc. but final personnel and strategy decisions since he stepped down were Gauthiers at least until more recently. Hard to say who steering the ship now. We'll find out soon enough though.

Don't underestimate the power of the embarrassment of losing on the younger generations ego. They've listened to the glory stories and want to prove they can make it happen as well.
