I appreciate the catches. Hardest thing is to proof and edit your own stuff, especially on short sleep. To me, it shows people are reading and paying attention, so it's a positive when they bring errors to my attention.
- bmeltzer

I can attest to this! When I write my blog I constantly get picked apart by editors and readers. So when I see it in your stuff Bill it doesn't bother me at all. You're analysis is spot on and that's what builds your credibility with me not some ridiculous observance of some rule on commas or spelling of names. Maybe it sounds as though my standards are low but really when reading one's own work it is more difficult than some people think. I can't explain it but yea crap happens and imo is why editors are needed.

I'm not saying trade Meszaros to fit Kubina... I'm saying if you can get kubina to stay at a cheap price, it gives you the ability to move a more expensive Meszaros for something the team needs...
- RooNosHockey

And what does the team need? The biggest need in the Organization is young defensive depth. If I can get a high first round pick for Meszaros, then maybe I'd think about it. But I'm not real interested in keeping a 36 year old defenseman over a 25 year old defenseman with still untapped potential, just to save some money. Especially with the uncertainty of Pronger and Timonen for the future.

yeah if some team is going to give carle six a year i definitely think it is in your best interest to let him go, as reliable as he has been.

friedman and other cbc guys were saying 69 and as high as 72 based on what the PA wants to do, but the CBA expiring in mid-september throws a wrench into that , of course.

the cap floor should absolutely be lowered, though. maybe it hurts the players in the first year or two, but benefits everyone over the long haul, imo. players' salaries are tied to revenues. so long as teams aren't forced to spend more than they afford, revenues should improve, right?

- OrangeBlack27

Brian Burke said he expects to have a cap # for next season by July 1, as always.

i forgot grossman was a free agent. i was thinking along the lines of carle at 5ish and grossman staying at 2, which you are right he wont do. so for your 8-9 mil youd take the two you have rather than go after Suter. definitely interesting, although hard to necessarily find fault with. two underrated players by far. although i had thought suter was very high on the wish list
- stayinthefnnet

Suter is a great defensman. But looking at the numbers they put up, Suter playing mostly with Weber, and Carle playing mostly with whoever is the call up of the day, they are pretty similar. Suter is a better player, but not 2 million better.

Would be kind of nice to resign Kubina, Carle, and Grossmann, then trade Meszaros, a pick and Voracek to Toronto for Schenn and Kulemin in the offseason.
- RooNosHockey

terrible, terrible, terrible trade

Schenn would be the wrong kind of player to add to that mix. I would need more of an offensive puck moving defenseman instead of Schenn. Already have Grossman, Coburn, and Kubina as stay at home defenders. It's about the mix.

And that $2m would help in pursuing other players we could really use.

I don't see how that is worth a Million bucks IMO. And it's not just 1M. It's 1M a year over the life of a deal. It's a lot of money. Hire somebody to move, and let the Wife pick out the house.
- MJL

Well Money isnt everything, at least to me... If it were me and Flyers are offereing 5 million and Minnesota is offereing 6, I'm going to stay. I'm familiar with the city, the team, the fans... I have friends in the city, my kids go to school here, I have a house here... Of course I'm going to try to get as much as possible, but as long as the offers are close, IMO it would be easier to stay.

definitely sound logic. in the cap era that two million can make a load of difference. i was just under the impression most wanted suter to arrive and be the proverbial anchor of the d corp. i definitely think it will take roughly 7 to get him.

I'm sure Carle has a price he is looking for. And if the Flyers meet that price, I think there is a good chance he would take it over a little more somewhere else. But he isn't going to sign for below what he's looking for just to avoid the stress of moving.

I agree with this. There are other factors than money, I think we saw that with Carters deal.

Call it a hometown discount if you must, but I think most players, if they enjoy where they are playing, will take less to stay where they are as long as the deal is not insulting. Especially in a cap world. The players know the deal as much as the owners and GM's do.

Sure they want to get as much as they can, but as you say, and I agree, there are many other factors involved.

I'll say this. When the Flyers play as they did last night, with the total team game. They can play with anyone in the League. And I think they can come out of the East if it continues.

It's not outside the realm of possibility that Carle takes a more agreeable salary to stay. From a GM position, however, you have to anticipate Carle's agent is coming in to get him the best deal he can get. "Hope for the best, but expect the worst" so to speak.

I am actually hoping they can get in on the Weber sweepstakes after NEXT season. Now there is a guy I would blow up the cap for.

ah i worry about that so much, if you guys free up the money from pronger and timmonen and have a ton of space. holmgren has given out some deals that have been a little rich, but he is still a skilled gm and could definitely find a way to make it work under the cap without losing too many key components. weber on the flyers would be very scary indeed.

So you were saying they get pushed around but are now saying they can't push anyone around.

EDIT: Leight to the dogpile!

- Flyskippy

I was saying basically that neither is physical. Specifics were not all that important but I said it a stupid way.

It seems most people aren't worried about their lack of physicality when paired together. I'm not saying they can't work, but when 4 of your defenseman have a mean streak in them I'd prefer to not pair up the 2 that don't.

I'm not sure its overpayment. Schenn is young and should develop into a much nicer player then Meszaros. Voracek is RFA, so let toronto work out his deal, and Kulemin is a defensively sound player, that has shown he has pop in the past... this year has been terrible for him, but he could easily pop 30 for this team again... I dont know.. I just want to see the Schenn Bros together... lol
