But aren't you tired of putting in guys that we hope are going to be front line goalies?
Nitti, Harding, Bishop fall under that catagory. No more growing pains in net for me.
Huet would be a stop gap but no better than Giggy was. For what is available Nabakov would be best UFA pickup in my opinion but I truly think we need to go the trade route. - leafs93
PLEASE....honestly...id much rather dump assets and get a legit goalie than Nash/Carter types. |

Well hello, Mr Clean. How goes it today? - weirdoh
Pretty good, Weirdoh. Pretty sunburnt but otherwise alright... Just burning through a little of my internet time checkin' up on the hockey world.
I feel so left behind... I didn't even know Wilson was fired until a couple days back

You think Boyd Devereaux would be available? That clutch hatty to vault the Buds into the 7th pick instead of the 5th alone should earn him a look going into next year. - 1979AD
damn....forgot about that slugger...yea, throw him in there instead of Bozak! |

we are fine
Gus has a .920 sv% under Carlyle
Burke will focus on getting Nash..since thats what we need now that Gus is solid - senstroll
We need to keep stressing this point so people will just leave the goalies alone for the time being |

I'm thinking Komi and Connolly in a package should land us Luongo.

WTF!? Wilson was fired!? He must've got caught using his office computer for porn or something because if his coaching (or lack thereof) was going to get him fired, it would've happened last year. |

And if Gus posts a .920+ sv% over the remaining games?
Still needs to go? |

Yup .920 over a whole 5 games. Why don't we just change his nickname to "The Answer"? |

Yes. I think the lesson of evaluating a goaltender based on meaningless games should have been learned after last year. |

I think you have to re-sign him.
He is one of the youngest UFA goalies available. He is an asset still. So sign him even if the intent is to trade him later. Don't lose him for nothing though.
With that being said, media saying Leafs can't go into next season with Reimer/Gus but also they can't go in with anything that would amount to less than them such as Reimer/Scrivens for example.
As a safety net you make sure you have at least Reimer/Gus signed for next year and then still go after a number 1.

I did some research and it turns out Wilson was fired because his boss didn't want to subject him to the "cruel and unusual punishment" of the boos and chants of the home crowd. I knew it couldn't have been his performance. |

in fairness.. gustavsson got an unfair shake playing in Wilsons open offense system.
this is one of those situations where a goalie would leave toronto only to have success somewhere else and 80% of leaf fans would be crying in two years about how we werent patient enough.
we honestly have no clue as to what we have... reimer needs seasoning in the minors to get over this funk.. keep gus and maybe try and get mason out of columbus.. he'd be cheap and he prolly just needs a change of scenery |

I'm losing faith in Burke right now too.
Grabo for more than Kessel is making, I don't know about that.
Connolly was a good chance to take, but not at that price.
Komi......WTF!!!!!

the wilson defenders always like to bring up how he is 6th or whatever all time for coaching wins
so what
his winning percentage was only around 0.535% for his career.. nothing special at all. |

i am glad for the franchise tho.. tallon is doing a nice job making them competitive.. they are by no means cup favorites but they need the playoffs to get their fanbase halfway interested again.
florida fans are fickle (i am including TB in this).. if you succeed they seem to come out but if you dont do well.. they leave ya in the lurch. - Dozzer
True that. And who can blame them, really? If, say, a basketball franchise started up in Winnipeg that a) really sucked and b) was located in a terribly inconvenient location (a la Florida and Phoenix), I wouldn't make much of an effort to get into it... Win and they will come.
Isn't also true that Miami isn't really a great sports city to start out with? I know the Marlins struggled to draw, not sure about the Heat or Dolphins in recent years.
Although bixll's tale of Tampa Bay Lightning giveaways might suggest otherwise
I'm happy for them too though, this isolated troll aside... I find my attitudes towards fan bases are more directed towards particular fans...
For example, at the end of this year I plan to make fun of Prock for his attitudes towards the Senators and Jason Spezza in particular... But have no desire to troll the fan base in general |

In a more defensively responsible system (not much more, but more none-the-less)
How do you expect a goalie to have a competative save percentage in the NHL under the system Wilson employed?
Go back in time to a man named Grant Fuhr.
While playing in EDM's run n' gun offense, Fuhr never managed a sv% over .900, yet was regarded as a great goaltender. All they cared about was the team's stats. When Gus was playing regularly, his stats weren't great, but the team was in 4th in the conference.
Gus' stats havent been in his favour because of the system in front of him.
Now that we will have one, his numbers will climb. Guaranteed. |

I'm good with that, but he will be UFA so his agent will be going to other teams for offers.
I'm thinking a contract similar to his last one with maybe a very small raise. Either way, he can be packaged. Would love him to stay in Toronto but only as a backup and I don't think he thrives as a backup, I think he needs the minutes.

grabo is more than justified (one look at the FA centres this season and it isnt hard to figure out why).. and you cant compare his UFA contract to Kessel's RFA contract.. completely different circumstances
Connolly was the second best centre on the market this past season... Burke took a chance and grabbed him.. he hasnt really panned out but he's not signed long term by any means.. so.. in fairness.. it was a reasonable chance to take.
Komi should start to look better as Carlyle's systems take hold.. he also becomes a tradable asset next season as he will be making less than his cap hit. |

I say let Gus play the rest of the year........ if he shows that he can produce under a Carlyle system, then concentrate on upgrading the talent up front |
