When this crap happens it is definitely a leadership issue.
It starts from Burke, and the void gets bigger from there.
NOBODY in this organization is stepping up.
On the ice, Phaneuf and Kessel are already on the first tee. These type of players need to go. - GoneFullRetard
I give Kessel a pass on this one. He is not a leader type player, and never will be. Phaneuf........ no excuse. |

probably the most potentially disasterous fail of burke while here.
the core he has built seems to become deflated in a real big hurry and then starts to mail it in.
cept grabo.. the boy continues to give it his all.. glad he has an A on his jersey... and I wouldnt be against putting the C on it either. |

I think the direction is pretty clear.
1) Do the best you can to establish a good team defensive system in the remaining 12 games.
2) Get a proven starter in the off-season; even a mediocre one will do
3) As distasteful as it is, bury Whoever you can out of Connolly, Lombardi, in the minors; possibly Komisarek also. We had no trouble doing that to Finger.
4) Don't trade any picks, or the young D. This includes Schenn. As bad as Schenn is, there is a real danger in trading him away, especially since we haven't yet seen him perform for a fundamentally sound team in front of a decent goalie.
5) Unload Kessel if you can get a good return. I don't care how good he is, he is not fit for this environment.
6) Unload Phaneuf. I know he is a "young" D, but I am starting to believe he is a cancer on the team/ He certainly isn't a leader.
... Where has Phaneuf been through all this? Has anyone heard a peep out of him. Sundin led worse teams than this and was always accountable and visible. People felt Sundin was a poor captain (I never agreed). How the hell is Phaneuf getting a pass.
Ultimately firing Wilson was the right choice (although I would have waited until the summer).
The truth is, the players are the ones who have to play the game. |

Would the Chief, or Sittler, or Wendel or Dougie or Mats stand for this crap??
Hell no!!!!!!!!!
You look at the team bench, and there is NOBODY chirping or speaking to the kids
Phaneuf is a fail
Komi is a fail
All the veterans have dropped the ball on this big time - banedlolol
imo...Phaneuf isnt a "vet"....hes still kinda young and inexperienced for a captain that plays defense. He still has a way to go HIMSELF before he teaches others. I feel like a captain should be fully developed within their own game...which Phaneuf is not. |

I like the way Phaneuf plays most of the time ....but he'll never be confused with a "team builder" type leader. Kessel is 24 going 18 from a maturity point of view. The older vets all suck ...Komi, Armst, Orr, Steckle, Lombardi, Connolly.
Lupul strikes me as the only 'glue' type guy. A guy that can bring a room together. Armstrong maybe but, like his face, his game is severely broken.
They need real leadership. A couple of bottom 6 veterans and somebody in the top 6 with some sand and leadership qualities. |

Only in Toronto could a player, top 5 in scoring, with 34 goals and 38 assists, be deemed one of the major issues on the team. Does everyone forget who Burke traded for? Kessel was never and will never be a power forward / leader like everyone is expecting him to be. He is a goal scorer. Plain and simple. Sure you can mold him to become better defensively, but don't attempt a full reconstruction. We got what we paid for, he is doing his job, and doing it pretty damn well. Kessel is NOT the issue. |

I know I shouldn't be greedy as I already got my wish it Wilson being fired ( ), but here is my wishlist for this team in the offseason:
1. Try and trade Phaneuf for equal or even slightly lesser value
2. Try and trade Connolly for equal or slightly lesser value
3. Unload Lombo for anything if possible
4. Unload armstrong for lesser value
Any 2 of the above would make me happy
5. Call up Blacker to fill in if Dion moves
6. Call up Colborne to fill in for Connolly/Lombo
7. Call up Kadri to fill in for Connolly/Lombo
8. Resign Gus to 2 year contract min (Don't kill me )
Would like 3 of these to happen
9. If we draft a top line centre, potentially send bozak out for an AHL prospect (wouldn't be room for him anymore, so might as well get a piece to help int he future) |

Ugly?? What's Ugly!? All I know is we're 2 points out of 28th Spot!!! - mfreedman
Agreed about the TANK NATION, it is supposed to be a great draft class, imagine if we traded some of our guys for 1sts. We could have ended up easily with 3 first rounders this year.
And when it is said and done, I think people will look back and say that Wilson didn't do as bad a job as we all thought he did. He did the best he could with the players he had.
The problem is that it seems we are building towards a future of fighting for 7th and 8th playoff seedings. I want to see a future built for fighting for 1st.

yes
I still think the kid will be great in the years to come...hopefully we can sign him cheap for a few years. Hes a Burke/Carlyle type guy. Just needs to get some goals again... - noename09
That's my point. He's just helping this team sooo much. We know he'll recover next year, even if only slightly, but in the mean time hes helping the cause.. Lower draft pick, and lower $ value on his new contract |

Can't see it ....if they lose tomoro you can waive the TBL goodbye and the Leafs will be virtually guaranteed to finish bottom 8. I say they end up between 4-8. |

Can't blame Phaneuf though, he is who he is. They chose him to be captain, not the other way around.
It comes down to Burke and Wilson at the time.
With the change in coaching philosophy I'm sure he is just as much a student as the rest of the guys right now.

Kadri needs to get an extended chance at the NHL level.
If not to try and become an impact player on our team, he needs it to at least be showcased so he can be used in a deal. After this year, I think Carlyle will do more help for him in a defense first system.
The cup ring on Carlyle's finger is tough for any player to ignore |

I wrote out a response, but the message didn't post. The ending point was that with a #1C taken in this draft, we might be closer than you think |

dont worry...the rest of us are fine with Kessel...you need to understand what "kind" of player he is....and that he merely needs certain types of players to gel with in order to succeed. |
