I think haley is a better hockey player in every aspect. We just don't play him for some unknown reason. Avery takes some of the dumbest penalties I have ever seen too. You are up by 2 goals with 5 minutes left... I am going to cross check a guy in the face and give them a 4 minute power play. - niteislander
Haley shot himself in the foot in camp this year. He took too many penalties. Haley needs to find the line between being an effective player and going overboard by taking penalties. The Isles are barely good enough to compete 5-on-5. They can't have a guy on the roster taking a ton of penalties.
I think Haley should get a shot as a fourth line guy next year if he's able to stay out of the box during pre-season. He can't be any less effective than Tim Wallace was and chances are he'd be more effective. I'd rather see Haley stick than see the team sign another bum like Wallace to plug into a fourth line role. |

Honestly, I think way too much was made over a couple of preseason penalties. He was a bit overzealous in preseason, fine...he was trying to make an impression. Better that than showing up to camp overweight or whatever. If the coaching staff wanted to send him a message and put him in the minors to start the season, that's understandable, but I hope they're not using that as a reason for not playing him all the way through January, February and now March. Imagine if everyone was held to this ultra-rigid preseason standard? The team went 1-4 and was shutout twice...plenty of folks did a lot of things wrong apparently. We wouldn't have even been able to ice a full team if we benched everyone who didn't have a perfect preseason. |

I may get killed for this but this is a player we could actually use. aside from all his off ice antics we don't have a player like this. He can put up points, agitate, hit and drop em' from time to time. Hate to say it but we could use him. Probably get him pretty cheap now too.
Before you guys kill me too much...i'm not sure who else would be available to fill this type of role who would actually considering signing here. Feel free to tell me. - gaf92
Well, I like the idea of getting Sean Avery. I would love to have a player on our team that everyone hates except for us heh |

Avery told Bravo TV (insert laugh track) he is retiring & Larry Brooks just confirmed it...he has way too big an ego to play out his golden years in the AHL. He has ceased being effective for some time now anyway. |

Exactly. He enjoyed about 3 seasons of being a useful hockey player with you guys, before that he was garbage and he's garbage now. He was good at what he did for a little, but now he's nothing more than a sideshow freak as far as I'm concerned.
I also read that he said he "threw his skates in the Hudson" |

I saw Brooks report that Avery's agent came out and said he wasn't serious about that and then Avery came back and said he absolutely was.
“I am officially retired,” Avery said on the show. “I threw my skates in the Hudson [River].” |

Goals and points are hardly the only indicator of a good player, especially when it comes to fourth line/borderline-AHL players. Avery flat out sucks and you'll see that when no other team on earth tries to pick him up. |
