Sometimes the Philly fans DO get a bad rep. Sometimes, they live down to that bad rep.
- Jsaquella

And sometimes a drug dealer who'd been living in Florida comes back to the area, beats up a Rangers fan and gets put away again. But the jersey overrides all the other facts about the scumbag.

Only the Flyers had the worst season of their existence just 5 years ago and the fanbase didn't drop off. They still packed the building, fans believed in Homer when he took over, and the message boards were still talking puck, hoping to see a good effort each night.

The difference is, with the Flyers, you know that the guy signing the checks is as serious about winning as any one of the fans.

There's never been an iota of doubt that Ed Snider wants to win every year, just like a fan would. That's why, despite the YTSNBM and the early 1990's struggles, the Flyers have drawn well and have also been a very successful team on the ice. Over their existence, the Flyers are like 600 games over .500.

I'm sure that that incident was precipitated by alcohol and beer muscles as much as anything. The jerseys worn by the people involved could have been any color.

Part of the problem with the A's also is that the stadium is in a horrible location of Oakland and public access to it is terrible, and the Oakland PD doesn't really monitor that access too well. The Sharks benefit tremendously from being next to a CalTrain station which runs at set intervals late into the night and allows people to have food and drink on it. The public system for Oakland doesn't have this, so it makes San Jose more appealing.

IMO, it's a no brainer to at least move the A's down there. There's also been talk of moving the Warriors and the Niners down there while the Raiders go back to LA.

- NJFlyersFan

That's not entirely true. The Oakland Coliseum is easily accessible via BART - which also runs at regular intervals late into the night. They may not "allow" food and drink on the train, but that hasn't stopped anyone.

I've been a die-hard Oakland since birth, and there is a rich organizational history. I'd really hate to see them move to San Jose, but at this point, it's what the team deserves.

Hard not to support an owner who is willing to take chances. He does everything possible to try and win the cup every single year.

The instigator had quite a record, drug and assault charges.

Like the ripping of briere currently? And how he should be bought out if his deal if the amnesty clause is added if he doesn't turn it around in the playoffs, despite his past success and contributions to the team?
- funmaster18

Should the Flyers keep him out of loyalty or do what's best for the team. If Briere doesn't end up pulling his head out of the dark hole its in, then the team can surely use that 6.5 million elsewhere.

When one goes in he will get hot. And when he gets hot, he's that type of player that is scary good.

For the record, I'm one of those people that said we should use the amnesty on Bryz (first time I had ever bashed him) after his abomination of a first period in Calgary. Am I please with the way he is playing now? Of course, what Flyers fan wouldn't and for that I'll gladly eat crow. With that said, I'm not about to bet my car he is going to keep it up. I'm happy for the guy and want him to succeed, but the sample size of him being mediocre to bad is double the sample size of good. But again, I'll gladly eat crow right now and hopefully will continue to for the next 8 years or so.

No, it's completely factual. People get tickets written for them on BART for any open food/drink. People can carry but can't have it open. BART stops shortly after midnight, and you usually have to sprint through the streets to make the last train (depending on what you do).

The walk from BART to the Coliseum sucks. It's the same stop you take to go to the airport, and I've had people waiting to jump me the second I walk out of the BART station there. If an A's game runs late, then it makes the situation even worse.

Can't remember anything about CalTrain times, but at least you can drink your own beer while on the CalTrain when prepping for a game.

And that is why Flyers fans are loyal to the extent that they are.

It's also why in 2001, the Phillies had the third worst attendance in all of baseball. They sold 36% capacity at home. In terms of actual asses in seats, the Phils were 24th.

Jump ahead to 2005, and the Phils are 13th in attendance, selling at a 76% clip and playing in front of an average of almost 13,000 more fans per game.

2010, after back to back World Series appearances, the Phillies are at the top in attendance-the only team that actually averages over 101% capacity.

Now, imagine if Bill Giles comes out and says that the Phillies are a small market team again, like he did in 2000. Or if they try to tell us that Steve Jeltz is an everyday MLB shortstop or that Ricky Otero is a quality MLB centerfielder again. Those attendance numbers will drop.

I know, but I'm sure the morons who injured Bryan Stow in LA were past offenders, too. I'm talking more about the visceral level of attacks on player on the local teams.

Should you trade a player based on 1 bad season? Guess we should have traded hartnell too, by last thanksgiving, I think.

The thing is, under Lurie, the Eagles have been a fairly consistent playoff team. I doubt that they have had back to back losing seasons under Reid's tenure. And despite Lurie being in it for the money, he has been willing to open the checkbook at times.

It is, but if the fanbase is convinced that winning is the only goal, they will support the team with their wallets. When the Phils, Eagles and Sixers have been bad, the fans have stayed away, in droves.

The walk isn't that obscene - you can get off the train, walk across the platform and be inside the coliseum in less than 5 minutes.

Regarding the "jumping" comment, I can't really argue there - considering I've been robbed at the very station in question.

I didn't say trade Briere. I said buy out his contract if there is an amnesty clause. Until this year I have been 50/50 on trading Hartnell... But no, his play is justifying his contract. Briere however hasnt scored in 22 games, and he is the highest paid player on a team that is cap strapped. If he is not producing, then the money can be spent in better places.

Briere still has plenty of time to turn it around, too. Just look at what Bryzgalov has done the past few weeks.

the chatter coming out of the NHL GM meetings is that they are considering instituting a two minute penalty for hand passes in the defensive zone.

as with the delay of game penalty for clearing the puck out of play, you'd think there would have to be a black and white rule here, which is not a good rule. If not, you're giving more discretion in the hands of the bumbling officials, which is not good either.
