Personal pride on the part of Bettman. He bent over backwards to not only get the team there, but to ensure the sale to the old group that included Gretzky and a lot of other things.

Bettman put so much personally into making Phoenix a viable market.

there was no fight to keep Atlanta (not saying they shouldn't have moved) and this insane fight to keep the Coyotes.

It made hockey my #1 sport again. The only reason it dropped to #2 was because I could actually play baseball around here in South Jersey. Hockey wasn't an option.

The fan support in Philly is great, when a guy isn't struggling. But when he is, he gets ripped to shreds.

I want to team to win, could honestly not care less about a lot of the fanbase.

- Jsaquella

Do you live in or around Philly. There is a reason the fan base is the way it is... We don't rip every player that struggles. There are guys that we like, and guys we dont like.... It has more to do with attitude and work ethic then it does performance... I thought you should know that...

I disagree with the "half the fun" part. I became a fan of the team, not to become part of a club. My dad had partial season tickets for years until he had two kids and started to run his own business, working 10 - 10 Mon. - Sat. He worked in the store below our apartment. When the Flyers would score, Dad would bang the ceiling with a broom and my brother and I would bang the floor with a Bobby Clarke replica stick.

I don't care how many other fans are out there. The Flyers are MY team. I need no one else, to be honest. It's cool when there are fellow fans, but too many fans are sheeple at the Temple of WIP or too casual a fan to not know that the articles written by Panacchio, Carchidi, Seravalli, and the like are rather devoid of actual hockey knowledge. A generation has passed now that did not learn hockey from Gene Hart - or someone who could TEACH the game like he did.

I would rather have 3 Cups and a mere 5,000 passionate fans if it meant I got to celebrate the Cup with hockey fans and not asses or imbeciles who feel rooting for a team is their right to broach the law by intimidating other teams' fans, acting like slobs, pretending that they are Andrew "Dice" Clay at games, etc. There is a serious difference between the fanbase that existed prior to the most recent lockout and now. Many fans' hearts and patiences wore out and the new breed of fan is less knowledgeable, more emotional, and certainly less sober-minded.

I grew up to love hockey and appreciate the sport, with the Flyers being my #1 team. I am now at a point where the game itself has been emasculated by its most predominant league and the values of its fans have gone to the crapper.

I'd rather talk puck with WayneZ and many others who are fans of other teams than most of the Flyers fans online.

You forgot that about the Devils boring trap style play from past years.
- NJFlyersFan

If the long-term Kovalchuk contract and the hiring of Pete DeBoer was Jeff Vanderbeek's way of turning the page on that, I think it's worked really well. A decent postseason will do wonders to getting more season ticketholders next year. I know I'm stating the obvious but the Devils have never had a good playoff run IN the new arena or WITH the more uptempo style of play or the calibur of players it has now. A good postseason this year especially is what we really need to happen for a lot of reasons (one of which is signing Parise) that go beyond the obvious ones.

No it doesn't. They pick a whipping boy and off they go. They have no idea what the true attitude or work ethic of a player is. And they don't care. They make it up and off they go.

I know exactly why fans are the way they are, and I think that is a pretty lousy way to be a fan. Look at Mike Schmidt. He was probably the best third baseman in the history of baseball and people HATED him in the city he played in. You want to be that kind of fan, I want little to do with you.

More like it has to do with often poorly conceived notions of work ethic. I can't appreciate the way players are singled out and crucified around here, not for one second.

IMO, the main reason is ego. One of Bettman's major motions as commissioner was to bring the game to the Southern states.

It's already failed in Atlanta, and is failing in Phoenix. He's buying as much time as possible to try to find a buyer that will keep the team in Arizona.

- bradleyc4

It is so tough for Bettman to swallow his pride to move organizations to Canada where they would thrive ...he will do everything he can till those certain teams go north ...it's a complete joke ...he only cares about his personal pride and not the state of the game in many cities around the league

If the Canadian dollar ever gets back to where it was when the Nordiques and Jets first moved, then simply being a team in Canada with a rabid fanbase wouldn't matter.

NHL salaries are paid in US dollars, for every team, be it Phoenix or Vancouver. But Canadian teams take in gate revenue in Canadian dollars. If a team like Winnipeg is getting 68 cents for every dollar, they will struggle.

The predominant use of steroids ruined its integrity. The multiple coverups, etc. and home run races of the 90's which were obviously helped by steroids. So, I mock it more for the reaction of my good friend, Crims, than anything else. Also, to curry favor with Davies.

It's much like I still like football (AKA soccer, as opposed to throwball), but cannot get past the diving that mars its integrity.

I don't really hate baseball. I hate what steroids did to it.

I caught a Ryan Howard baseball at a game a few years back. Still have it.

Yep. Bryz is goofy, so when he struggles, it's obviously because he's a goofball and not working hard. Donovan McNabb obviously doesn't care because he smiles on the field.

Wilt Chamberlain was loved-and is loved now-in Philly, and he was a very lazy player at times.

WIP or as I like to call it EBN(the eagles broadcasting network) sucks at covering hockey...They are horrible go off what the beatwriters write...with that sad the true fans are in here arguing and discussing team matters every day in mostly intelligent way.

Actually though Jsaq with Schmidt he could be a real Richard off the field. My father witnessed him chase off two preteen kids at a department store in Cherry hill in the early 80's who were children of family friends. He was really rude and told them point blank when they approached him in the checkout line "to get away". Stuff like that actually did add fuel to the fire with that particular guy. Back then there wasn't internet and social media. I bash the crossing broad guy for that phony story on Bryz because the source is nameless and faceless but I am not a nameless faceless source. Otherwise you have a point about the fanbase, it's too much of this sound like an imbecile to sound smart epidemic that was is bred at the temple ofWip like skippy said. Anyway I have to bounce if you guys want to know more about that incident hit me up on pm . leights

I was at that exact game, and he was entirely correct. It was damn silent in that ballpark. I wish it weren't, I wouldn't have had to listen to the grumbling poophead behind me cursing at the ovation Cliff Lee got when he was pulled.

Yes the Philadelphia sports media is definitely one of the worst in the country. The people tend to be lemmings and do / say whatever is fed to them through whatever media stream they digest. God forbid someone uses critical thinking and logic to form their own opinion on things.
