The system is pretty messed up. The majority of employers do require a drug test. So why is it that to receive social services benefits you don't have to? Is it because most of these people have kids and the government doesn't want to punish the child who doesn't have a say?
- HonkFortheGoose

whos paying for all the tests?

i think that's the nuts and bolts of it.

you can't punish the children.

- EricNearBuffalo

I think what it should boil down to is the parent needs to take a drug test. If they fail, they get assigned a social worker who gets designated to take care of the finances as far as food and stuff like that goes. The parent doesn't have any access to the money on their own. This way at least you know it's going to put food in the kids mouth and a roof over their head. Period.

Thats basically it. They throw money at these people in hopes the kids see some of what they need. As opposed to nothing.

But the problem it creates is a culture of uslessness, helplessness, dependence, excuses and laziness that perpetuates itself generation after generation.

i would imagine if you had to take a test, a lot of people wouldn't even try.

I totally agree with that comment but I steer clear of politics on facebook. I'm applying for jobs in academia and if political beliefs posted aren't liberal, you could really get screwed by them. I talk politics on Twitter with a code name. I have freedom that way.

Now your talking about trying to micro manage people lives. Now that is costing us more money. And they are only going to resist help and means to "stay helpless" stay in the system. 90% dont want help and dont want out.

That's totally understandable. I don't really fall into any particular mold when it comes to politics. I like to try and keep my facebook locked down though, nobody can see anything unless they know me and my full name isn't even on there. I also won't friend people I work with because I don't need to deal with all that drama.

See, that's just it, most of the people in the system wouldn't want to bother with all of that. So in the end, it would probably be cheaper. There would be less people in the system.

i stopped getting political on Facebook because people in my life would tear me up because i am an independent. i have liberal and conservative beliefs. couldn't stand being heavily criticized over my thoughts.

what i hope for is some of the big corporations start realizing that the grass wasn't greener in developing countries and bring jobs back to the country that made them what they are. i've read recently that there are rumblings that this exact scenario is starting to play out. maybe with better job opportunities aside from the standard b.s. of getting crapped on in a minimum wage job, some of these people can "pull themselves up by their boot straps" and make a better life for themselves and those who depend upon them.

That's what I like about working where I do. It's a call center but it's not outsourced at all. Everything is in house and all local based on region. When you call in, you're talking to someone who essentially could be your neighbor or relative of someone else you know.

Ever hear of divide and conquer? That what politics in our country serve to do. People that should be friends become enemies over politics. That what keeps the powerfull in power. An un-unified public.

I know what you mean. I'm a mod conservative. Most of my family is a true WNY Dem Liberal. I used to be in the mid-late ninety's but I "evolved" into a mod conservative. I still don't understand why WNY is so liberal after the many years Buffalo/WNY has been in economic decline. But my big peeve is in the liberal media. I hate how much of the media influences the thinking of many people with their one sided reporting. Anyway, I don't want to get into a political debate here.

I thought the Sabres played Boston on Friday but just realized it's on Thursday. Damn, I hope they aren't a tired team again.

Well, we get the better end of the deal tomorrow because Carolina played today and then has to travel to play us tomorrow. Just part of how the whole thing works out. Plus Boston did play today, so it's not like they have 4 days off between games like the Jets did.

Example. Middle class family. Mother is a gambleholic and they barley survive and are always late on bills and never have money for things other then necessities...

Why can't that family get welfare? Yet they will give welfare without drug tests because of the kids? Well what about the kids in this family!?!?

All in all the welfare system is a joke and people try and live of off free handouts!

Enroth needs to play tomorrow, period. Carolina is a team you need to beat, especially in this part of the year, if you're going to get in, regardless of who is in goal.

oh for sure. it's been reduced literally to a system. people are using/exposing it to the fullest extent. i saw a mini documentary about a family in Florida where the father lost his good paying job and they were basically stretching every little resource they had until it was fully exhausted, having to turn to food banks and things like that. freaking kills me...

To be fair, the NHL's return to Winnipeg, and the fan atmosphere has been one of the biggest stories of the season. Think about it this way, if you're not a fan of the Buffalo Sabres, or watch them at all, and you turn on this game as an impartial observer, is there anything about Buffalo right now that is intriguing at all? Maybe, Miller's play as of late (and they gave him plenty of props last night), but that's about it.

yes. I noticed it. It was ridiculous. They were making it sound like Winnipeg was Detroit. Last time I checked going into last night we were only 2 points behind them in the standings and we had a game in hand on them, but yet they kept talking about how inferior Buffalo was.

Without going into detail my job involves dealing with welfare recipients and other govt. recipients a lot. Basically most of your worst nightmares about welfare are true. Flat screeen TV's, Air Jordans, not working, hanging out smoking blunts while playing X-box till 2am while your school age or younger kids are still up. They view sending thier kids to school as a babysitter service/2 free meals while they sleep in, go to the welfare and heap office, go to court appearances, smoke blunts and generally do nothing.

I was insulted. Buffalo has had a huge role in making the post lockout era what it is. Right after the lockout all the other big US hockey markets totally sucked ass(Boston, Pittsburgh, Rangers, Isles, Washington, Philly to a leser degree) and thier bandwagon fans were nowhere to be found. While we arent a huge city but we carry US tv ratings and help fill seats in any arena we play in. We started the winter classic. And they go off about the Jets because they are in 8th on March 5th? Really? Last I checked thats no better than the Thrashers every year.

I don't get it either Gil... So stupid. I don't talk politics much but when I do the people around me seem to listen and I definitely get my point across...

Mom's a Rep. Dad's a Dem. When I was around 16 I started to do my own re-search and gather my own opinion. I respect others, but to me liberalism makes no sense what so ever. Government is already too big, and taxes are far too high.

That said, my dad usually votes for his money, and that usually ends up being Republican. I tend to be inbetween on social issues, but the economics of liberalism make no sense. Being a small business family you see it.

Example: Dems think raising the minimum wage will help people. Truth: It will only hurt, people need jobs, raising the cost to an employer will not help them afford to hire more people, my parents are a perfect example.

Also, in my studies I've come to realize that FDR was actually one of the most damaging presidents of all time. Most of his policies directly have effected how life is today. Dems argue because he's their patriarch. They think the new deal was great and got people back to work. Unemployment was higher in 1939 before the war than it was right after the Depression. Numbers don't lie people.

Sorry for the non hockey rant. I'll hang up now for your response!

The real people who suffer in all this are the people who need it. I do believe that a lot of people manipulate the system. However, just before Christmas, I volunteered at a program at my Church, that took in the homeless in between housing. There are people out there that really do need it, but they get lumped into the same category as the above. The system does, indeed, need to be reformed, but after those couple of days, I've become very wary of lumping everyone one welfare into that category, which it's very easy to do (I did it).

This may sound completely terrible for the most part, but I try not to pay any attention to politics because all it does is irritate me. Nobody can agree on anything which is why pretty much nothing gets done. End of story.
