He now will be under the microscope of Leaf Nation......... just as Connolly. When he starts to disappear, the boo birds will be out in full force. You can disappear while making 3 million...... at 5.5 million, we expect you to produce consistently
- faceto27

Its so true...so many players don't get that aspect of these contracts. The Komisarek/Schenn contracts are great examples...they're being expected to perform to a standard no less than their contracts suggest. If you Dont want the criticism, play big or don't sign the big deal.

He hasn't put up the numbers ONE TIME in his career to justify that contract. If he was signed to 4 million, he'd be one of my favorite Leafs...his new contract is brutal.
- clarkysduster

Absolutely not! The intangibles he brings forth are not to be forgotten! He hits and is great defensively! The only thing that makes it seem like a bad contract are the other poopty contracts we have, i.e Connolly, Lombardi,Army.. Once those are off the books there will be plenty of money to go after FA. Great signing end of story.

Would you rather let him walk? Who would fill the void? For Christ sakes don't say Nash/Parise/etc. They're NOT coming... stop the pipe dream and be happy that we signed the best FA centre on March 6th for roughly 500 000 less than he would have gotten on the open market.

Mark my words, we're going to regret this contract. If what someone posted is true about wanting to be the highest paid forward...he's absolutely (frank)ed because that sends a message of selfishness.
Grabo now has the 35th highest cap hit in the league. come on.

No, I don't think those guys are coming and i know (and his agent knew) we couldn't let him walk....but he didn't need to be signed to a 5 year deal. 2-3 max at that price-tag.

Take into account that new contracts are getting more expensive every year. Pretty par for the course these past two years.

I know it's the going rate and all...and thats the most (frank)ed up part. these guys aren't worth the money. Grabo is a 40-60 point guy.

And intangibles aside, how can we justify that amount with stats on a sheet? Intangibles are important but are we going to pay Kulimen 4.5 million because of it? No.

In less games, Grabovski has more points than Ryan Getzlaf ( $5.325), Brad Richards ($ 6.66), Ryan Kesler ($5.00), Tomas Plekanec ($ 5.00), and Paul Stastny ($6.60)

These guys all play Centre. The average age of these players are 27.8 years. Grabovski turned 28 in Janurary.
With the exception of Ryan Kesler - Grabovski is just as good defensively as all of them. The fans love him and he wants to be here.

Now, How is this a TERRIBLE contract?

haha. apparently we both follow Cap Geek on Twitter.
Some pretty good players on there...
But you have to keep in mind that some of the biggest fish on there are coming onto contract years and are due for huge raises. Also many of the names on there are older than Grabs and making this kind of money in the twilight of their careers.

Ok so here we go:

- For those of you who didn't take me seriously when I said for the longest time that 5-5.5 is what he'll cost, eat crow.

- This new deal will take Grabs to 33 years of age. Hope he stays healthy and doesn't tail off.

- This deal means that Connolly will almost certainly have to go this off season.

- Can only imagine how much Joff's new deal will cost with Grab's numbers considered. That means Joffer will be in the 6-6.5 range easily

Grab's streakiness is a concern. Pluswe don't want to see a Tucker-like situation where his playing style results on increased wear and tear as he enters his 30s. That will be a factor going forward.

Just look at his performances vs. MTL this year. Yes, he's had good point totals, but PK Subban came wihtin a hair of knocking him into next week on two seperate occasions this year. His playing style is so wild that if he gets his bell run, or if he tears something, he may not be the same player again.

I'd have been ok with this deal if it were 3 years. 5 for me is just too long

Seems like with every signing... The NHL is closer to a lockout once again. No way the players give up these salaries without a fight

with the salary cap going up yes contracts will go up... i was hoping for 4.5 as thats fair for a player of his caliber (2nd line ), expected 5 because if he hits open market someone would give him 5.5.... guess i was wrong

no home town discount or discount of any kind

Numbers-wise, Grabo doesn't deserve 5.5 mil. Role-wise...maybe. But if we wasn't getting that, we lose him. Then who would take his spot? Connolly, then call up Colborne? Maybe. Is that a winning formula? Could be, we don't know, but probably not.

The thing that frustrates me most, though, is when you see a guy like James Neal. He's on a kick-ass team, he has kick-ass talent, and he just signed for 5 mil.

Once we get rid of all the crap on our team, the deal will look fine. I'll be happy paying Lupul is he produces a similar season next year.

Shed Komisarek and TC.

Let's give Kadri a full season with the big boys.

I have a good feeling Carlyle will be able to get Komisarek going as a 4/5 d man! I hope im right but ya never know... Also im hoping he can get Kuli back on track next year and maybe get Frattin really going as he seems good with those tough fore checking type players.

Im okay with this deal just freaking trade for B.Schenn!!! Franson 1st plus Colborne for B schenn! They have no choice, the guy enters our core and grows with our team. I think hes just the center we need, and i think he can also get Luke going and vise versa. You never know but this is a guy i would seriously overpay for just because i think his value will go up a lot next season. At the draft Philly should like our destined for top 10 pick.
