Im in Delco so its not that far a ride for me.. I have been lucky.. over the past 4-5 seasons I have probably been to 90% of the games I have ever gone to. A few years back I made it to 25. This year (with the whole buying a house, ring, and planning a wedding nonsense) I havent been able to get out to many. This is my first game since November

Well it should be a good one. You may want think twice about wedding photos, we all know what happens when you get a picture taken with someone

Seriously though, congrats, sounds like a busy but good time for you

I got into an arguement with a friend of mine yesterday who is a Rangers fan. I told him that if his team had to deal with the type of injuries we have this year, they wouldnt even be in the playoffs right now.

Think about it.. Every regular forward we have has had at least one significant injury for the exception of Talbot, Hartnell, Simmonds, and Voracek. All of our defenseman have also been injured except for Matt Carle. We lost our Captain and one of the top D-man in the league for at least the season, and the player we were expecting to lean heavily on, JVR, has only played 43 games... half a season.

If the Rangers had to deal with injuries like this, especially to thier top forwards, who havent missed a single game, then I'm pretty sure they would be fighting for a playoffs spot right now... The fact that we were able to deal with all this and still be in 5th is pretty incredible and speaks to the depth on this team... What do you guys think?

agreed. but werent you calling for the Coach to be fired a few days ago?

I will agree the Flyers have had more injuries and what they've done is impressive. But the Rangers have not been totally without injuries. Callahan is out right now with the "bruised foot." Staal was out for the first 3 mos of the season. He's their #1 defenseman. Sauer is probably out for the season and was playing about 18 mins a night fore them before he was hurt 12/6. They have not gone without adversity and they've managed to dominate the division and conference.

I feel like the Bruins have been freakishly free of any serious long-term injuries to key guys.

- bodiva88

How many games have the Rangers top 5 scorng forwards missed so far this year....5 and that includes Callahan's current injury. Sure they have had some injuries, but they also havent had an injury to any key offensive guys until a few games ago... If that was different, if they had the types of injuries the Flyers had... it would be completely different... Imagine if Stepan only played 43 games the entire season. Imagine if Richards and Animisov both missed 10 games each. Imagine if Gaborik got a concussion when he was at his hottest scoring streak of the season for 8-10 games... Imagine if Staal was out the entire season. And that doesnt even count of the injuries to the depth guys like Schenn, Couturier, Read, etc... I dont think they could cope...

Please read what I said. And respond to that. Not whatever your hobbyhorse is for the day. I said the Flyers had had more injuries. But pretending the Rangers have not had a key injury is not giving them credit.

And considering how many shots they block, I guarantee you they've been playing hurt all year.

The situation with injuries is what it is. Asking what the Rangers would do if their players were injured is hypothetical. There is no answer to the question because it hasn't happened.

I will tell you one thing, as long as Lundqvist is playing at this level, the Rangers will be competitive regardless of who gets hurt.

They could cope, no doubt about it. And still make the playoffs. And they'd do it the same way they are now. With defense and goaltending. Which is the same way the Pens have done it, missing Crosby, Malkin, Staal, and Letang for large chunks of time.

I've been wondering why Bruiser is still at Drexel. Because he has done a good job and I know he's well regarded.
- bodiva88

Flint's overall record at Drexel is good, he's never got the team to the Tournament in his decade at the school. I guess that is being held against him.

And Peverley has been out 3 weeks now as well. Boychuk, and Ference have been banged up as well. And now Paille, and Rask are injured.

Injuries are starting to catch up to the Bruins.

Why wouldnt you be surprised then? If you can see the injury situation has been challenging, then hopefully Holmgren does too.

Great blog Bill. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all of your pieces on Howe. Very well done.

Question, other than Howe, would you know the list of defensemen post 53-54, who never won a Stanley Cup, or Norris Trophy that made it to the Hall of Fame?

- PLindbergh31

Brad Park would be one.

They keep +/-?!

I'm glad my old guy leagues eschew such advanced stats.

- MrBuzzcut

No, they don't. He asked me to keep track of +/- when he wanted to start playing D a few years back since "defensemen don't score much, Dad."

Then we got into a long debate over how +/- is not a good indicator of performance. It put the threads here to shame.
