It's a predatory hit targeting the head...period. No if's, and's or but's.

If there is no suspension, then all the talk about removing headshots is just that.

Exactly. He had Voracek lined up in his sights.
- MJL

Of course he did. But if Voracek is skating upright in his normal position and takes that hit, just as hard, in the chest, are we even having this discussion? Saying Kronwall purposefully targeted his head is inaccurate. If his head is not down he gets hit in the chest.

I guess every player should just skate with their heads down low now so that every bit of contact is to their head. And then everyone can say their head was targeted.

Think about that.

i think you're missing the point of where it says immedately prior or simultaneous to. that is NOT the case in this incident
- flyerscup2011

I'd still be surprised to see Kronwall get hit with a suspension. And if he does get anything, it'll be a short one, maybe 3 games

Holy smokes. Jagr and Jake out now. Flyers with barely three lines of forwards now. Gonna have to think twice before risking a misconduct to try to kill Kronwall.

Rule 48 - Illegal Check to the Head

48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A hit resulting in contact with an opponent's head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact is not permitted. However, in determining whether such a hit should have been permitted, the circumstances of the hit, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit or the head contact on an otherwise legal body check was avoidable, can be considered.

48.2 Minor Penalty - For violation of this rule, a minor penalty shall be assessed.

48.3 Major Penalty - There is no provision for a major penalty for this rule.

48.4 Game Misconduct Penalty – There is no provision for a major penalty for this rule.

48.5 Match Penalty - The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent with an illegal check to the head.
If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline can be applied by the Commissioner at his discretion.

48.6 Fines and Suspensions – Any player who incurs a total of two (2) game misconducts under this rule, in either regular League or playoff games, shall be suspended automatically for the next game his team plays. For each subsequent game misconduct penalty the automatic suspension shall be increased by one game.

If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline can be applied by the Commissioner at his discretion (refer to Rule 28).

There's the language that will be referred to when Shanahan declines to suspend Kronwall

Is receiving the puck from behind you and then turning up ice now deemed a "vulnerable" position? What else was Voracek supposed to do there?

That's as dumb as someone saying Downie jettisoned himself into the boards headfirst after his hit by Laraque a few years ago.

Three games seems about right. I'd be happy with that.

i think he'll get 2 or 3, maybe only 1 because 1. shanahan played for the wings. 2. he knows lidstrom and datsyuk are already out. 3. i don't believe he's been suspended before.

but with jake being concussed that should hopefully escalate the number of games.

Everyone here screaming about how Kronwall should have let up or avoided the hit. Had that been Carle or another Flyers defenseman and he let up or avoided the hit you would be screaming bloody murder about how "soft" he is.

I'd be happy with one or two games ... at least it'd be an acknowledgement that it was a bad hit.

next goal is big here.

It's a hard one. I think that Kronwall certainly could have let up. And I do agree that he baited Voracek. But Jake's got to know where he is and who is out there with him. Guy has a rep as a hitter with a pretty casual regard for opposing players' health and safety.

Clearly no one is able to give their opinion about a hit without the sweater being taken into account. Good call
