How about all those captains that have actually lead their team to a Stanley Cup victory first...
Chara, 2011 (team still a contender)
Toews, 2010 (team still a contender)
Lidstrom, 2008 (team still a contender)
Would put Crosby if not for the injury.
Don't get me wrong, Callahan is a great player and a great captain (look at what he's done with this team), but you need to win before you can be called the best. Now, if the Rangers do win the Cup  , you can easily make a case for him.

You're placing far to much importance on winning a cup. Winning a championship in a team sport is dependent on many things. You can't hold the lack of a championship against an individual.
