This is never going to change. It's been like this since the beggining of time. I checked on another message board just to see what was being talked about. And I read what a waste of a player Carle is. And it's not just one person. It's a large percentage of posters on that board. Well that tells me how much time I want to spend on there.

There is an element of risk in a contract like that, where you are locking up a player based on a short body of work and presumed future production. Sometimes it pays off immediately, sometimes not for a few years and sometimes it backfires.

The Flyers are looking pretty good right now cap wise on the Claude Giroux deal, which runs two seasons beyond this one and will still leave him with one more RFA off-season afterwards.

Another example: Early in the 2009-10 season, Dallas locked Loui Eriksson up in a six-year contract extension that runs through 2015-16 and pays him $4.25 million on the cap (nearly 4 times what he was making on his then-current deal). He was coming off his first breakout year, but was off to a slow start when he signed the big extension. It worked out very well ever since.

On the flip side, Tomas Plekanec hasn't quite been a $5 million player since signing the big six-year extension after his 70-point season a few years ago (after posting 39 the year before).

The Flyers signed JVR to the big extension based on his playoff run and strong play over the final 60 games of last season (people forget he had no goals in the first 21 games and still finished with 21 on the season) and then the big playoff. They were basing it also on his dedication to year-round conditioning, and the career progress path of similar players.

There was a lot of good rationale behind the JVR extension, especially with Richards and Carter gone from the team. So far it looks like it may have been given too hastily but in the same situation, they'd probably do it again.

I was waiting for you to break out the Erickson deal, such a good contract.

He absolutely does. At age 22, that was also one of the complaints about both Wheeler and LeClair. That's my point, I don;t want to trade him now, and see him become John LeClair somewhere else.

You know if the dam ping pong balls wernt rigged we would have Kane and this wouldn't be an issue! Of course the only year we suck and get a high draft pick its the worst draft in the last 8 years

You mean a big, strong, fast, highly skilled player who for the most part avoids contact and is content on playing on the perimeter?

Any way you slice it, he's been a rather big disappointment so far in Philly.

Lucky for him there is Bryz. Should Bryz somehow find his form from the last few years, JVR will be A1 whipping boy. I'd say he has till next years trade deadline (right or wrong) to live up to his #2 overall pick and have a breakout campaign, else Holmgren will ship him elsewhere.

- LW2530

Saying that JVR avoids contact for the most part is disingenuous. He works the boards, will finish checks. If you were to say he doesn't use his size to his advantage enough then I would agree.
JVR will never be a guy that lays out guys with hard hits.
I'm ok with that but I would like to see him drive to the net more.
He is still only 22. Philly has absolutely no patience with players at all.

The irony of Kane scoring that SCF GWG was so ridiculous a person wouldn't have even been able to make it up on the night of that draft.

Look at the Season that Neal had last year. He had 22 goals and 23 assists. And he scored 1 goal in 20 games with the Pens. Obviously some adjustment there needed to be made. Now he's nearly a point a game player this year. There are some loose comparisons that can be made between the two.
- MJL

So what you're saying is that Neal did steriods.

Ironic because Kane scored it? Or ironic because it is a symbol of Philly goaltending for the majority of the last 20 years? That was and still is the worst shot Kane has taken in his career.

A fact that wasnt lost on me, something that little squrit who reports for the blackhawks always brings up when he interviews a flyers fan.

More ridiculous then the flyers rout to get there, I was drunk at a bar with my friends watching game 5 of the devils game and went on a tyrade saying the only way the flyers could go to the cup is if we beat the devils, the habs beat the caps, the pens won, we played boston, the habs played pitt, and we played the habs in the finals...the whole bar was looking at me like I was on drugs....we all know how that turned out

This is another view point that you see a lot from the Philly fanbase. I don't know if it's the same in other Hockey cities, but it certainly is here. If your not a player that get's in people's faces, plays physical after whistles, throw big hits around, or fight. They your not well perceived by a lot of fans. It's why players like Carle, Carter, and JVR receive a lot of the unwarrented criticism that they don't deserve. There is no issue with JVR's heart in my opinion. He's not the same type of player that Simmonds is, and isn't going to be. And conversely, Simmonds doesn't have the talent and ability to be the player that JVR can be. We'll see if he'll get there. I think he will.

Everything about it. The fact the Flyers were by far the worst team and didn't get the # 1 pick, the fact the Blackhawks didn't screw the pick up, the fact it was a soft goal etc.. etc...

The Flyers remind me of the Red Sox pre 2004. A good franchise that comes up short time and again. A fan base that by in large waits for something to go wrong, and 9 times out 10 it does. In fact the parallels between the 2004 Red Sox, and 2009-10 Flyers are very comparable. Both teams faced 3-0 series deficits and were able to overcome them. Of course the endings were different.

Wasn't just here, though. I know most people here were tongue-in-cheek about it.

But there were any number of idiots -- the type that angrily yell "hit somebody!" when the team has allowed 2 harmless shots in the last 10 minutes and "shoot!"when there's a maze of players and no angle for a shot -- who were popping up on other message boards, Twitter and (of course) WIP to accuse JVR of malingering the concussion.

Usually I just let that sort of stuff slide, but that made me angry. JVR didn't deserve that. Criticize his inconsistency, sure. Say the injuries are not an excuse for his so-so production, OK. But accuse him of malingering? That's way, way over the line.

Ahh. I have stopped listening to WIP (don't tell Glen!) and don't read the comments elsewhere. So I didn't realize that had moved into some people's view of reality. Like I said, dolts!

For a light-hearted addition to today's interactions. We were tweeting stupid things people yell during the game...

Hit somebody! (when they are on the PK)
Stand em up at the blueline (they apparently do not understand the interference rule)
HAND PASS!!! (when the guy is in his defensive zone.)

feel free to add your own.

The whole "SHOOT IT!" when the player clearly has no shooting lane really gets on my nerves. It's a good thing they don't allow handguns in arenas.

I'm having the stomach flu or something of that nature and my wife just asked me right before I read this if drinking coffee is good for me today
- JoeRussomanno

Well, I do understand the caffeine headache. I realized recently that the reason I'd been getting migraines Sunday nights was that I don't go to Starbucks on the weekend. So I've had to change my routine a bit. Just one cuppa either Sat or Sun and I'm usually fine til Monday (I'm not a serious junkie!).

So what are you saying lets wait till hes thirty to produce like leclair and in the meantime pay him now for that future production. What i was trying to say, was that he doesnt deserve the contract hes getting next year! That is all.
- Philly1980

The last CBA, in which the UFA year was moved forward, means teams need to decide early in order to mitigate the cost over the guy's career with the team. It does lead to guys being paid on expectations more than on past production.
