I think what has been lost is that this is REALLY all John's fault for commenting in yesterday's blog that the Pens were finally getting healthy, thereby jinxing us to a night that saw the Pens lose both point men on one of the top pp units around the NHL.
We are lucky that the whole team didn't come down with ebola or something after making that observation!
Repent John! Repent!!!!! |

Interesting stat here IMO:
Mike Schopp @Schopptalk Close
I think this Rangers stat -- a TOTAL of 4man-games lost to injury among their top 9forwards -- is yet another reason to bet against |

So if playing the puck puts any player at risk, should we just let the puck sit at center ice after the faceoff until the clock expires?? Cause every player on every team contorts himself to play/get to/shoot a puck every game. The resposibility is on the hitter to deliver a legal hit on a moving target. Tough to do, sure, impossible, no. The guy from the Wings blows players up all the time, cleanly. |

Please look at the 45-50 second mark or the replay...

I'm seeing it differently than you. You're entitled to your opinion, but I just don't see an infraction of any kind on this play. |

Watch the replay please...poke check by Letang...his head is leading the way...Nystrom can avoid a potentially dangerous hit, but he choose to make sure he hits him.
If they want to eliminate plays that cause concussions...is this not one of them? - icedog97
It's up to both players to avoid contact, and it can be debated how much of a headshot it is at all.

Agreed, it was Letang's fault and unfortunately he'll likely be out a while now for it. (frank)in way she goes - pens_66
Sucks for everyone. Letang is a dandy of a player. I hate seeing anyone injured on a play. |

Yes, playing the puck is very stupid thing to do in the NHL, let's not put any onus on the hitter who doesn't play it at all.
When Hatcher broke Roenick's jaw, was it Roenick's fault too??? - ryman1566
No, it was Tkachuks
When the Stars complained about Roenicks run at Modano from the March 99 game....Tkachuk responded in the media with something along the lines of "do something about it or shut up". Hatcher did something about it when they met in the next game.

He doesn't need to, but he's definitely allowed to. Nystrom's on the team because he's a physical player. He starts passing up hits like this and he's in the AHL. - jtommyt
I tried to make this point earlier but apparently it's not relevant. |

In my opinion, that's exactly what he does. A roughing call doesn't make any sense to me at all. If this is a head shot, then he should have received an "illegal contact to the head" penalty. If it's interference, then again he should get an interference penalty.
He got neither.
I don't get it. He didn't punch Letang in the head... that would actually constitute a roughing penalty. |

It was a rough, nothing more, nothing less. You know as well as I do that whatever textbook definition of the rule is not the one that is routinely enforced. |

I think that first picture shows it pretty clearly. If Letang continues on the path he was on he absorbs a normal hit. Because he tried to stop and get out of the way he got caught in the head. |

Thats a standard call in the OHL. I tried to look it up. I figured it'd be call the "Something happened here, I'm pretty sure of it, and this guy is down and the boards made a really loud noise" call. |

Well the on ice official called a penalty...so somebody saw something.
All I am saying is that it's pretty clear Letang's head was leading the way...
And it's pretty clear, if you watch Nystrom's right arm/shoulder, that he made sure he hit Letang...
I am just putting 2 and 2 together...and combined with what the league says it wants to do to eliminate concussions.. then...for once...Mike Milburry is RIGHT!

Wow. That's stunning. Wonder what it is like to for a team to play virtually in tact?
More telling, their PP is terrible and they are near the bottom in GPG scored. |

Not related to that actual topic... but if the day were to come along that I agreed with Milbury on something hockey related, i think I'd take a step back and re-evaluate my stance on that given subject. |

That's fine. I'm curious to hear the official description.
I do have to wonder though...as mentioned earlier...if that's Matt Cooke and Mike Green getting hit...does Cooke get a suspension?
And I'm not just saying that because Cooke is a Penguin...I hated when Cooke made those plays...I'm saying it relative to a guy with a history. |

And still in first place and have the least goals against. Imagine if they had a PP? One point behind Vancouver for most points with three games in hand. |

It's hard to say... the on-ice call might have changed given Cooke's reputation. It's a fast-paced game, and officiating is a subjective thing.
If the on-ice call had been a head-shot call, I think Shanahan's forced to level a suspension. If it were called the same though (2 minute roughing) I don't see how you can suspend a player for this hit... even with suspension history. |
