Buffalo made some nice trades yesterday. Getting a #1 and # 4 for Gaustad was a heist. And getting a legit center in Hodgson, for Kassian was an incredible haul.

Better chance of selling a radio to a deaf man then unloading Bryzgalov's contract on anyone.

Must say though, I like that Poile is trying to make a push. I think that this is him trying to show Weber and Suter that the Preds are players for sure. I applaud him for making the moves

The 4th rounder went with Gaustad to Nashville for the 1st round pick.

I cant believe a team paid that price for Gaustad. I think hes a nice player but no way is he worth a first rd pick.

It was clarified a little later. Makes a bit more sense.

Oh ok. I saw that now. The TSN talking heads said yesterday Buffalo got the # 4. Even so, still a good trade for Buffalo.

Absolutely. Have to figure he is showing both Weber and Suter the Organization is committed to winning.

Still think the biggest news was how Howson basically threw Nash under a bus. Why he has a job after saying that with the horrible return he got for Carter is a (frank)ing mystery

Yeah. Still think a #1, even though it will be towards the end of the first round is a steep price to pay for a rental of a third line center. As Mookie said, Poile wants to show Weber, and Suter they are committed.

Howson has been a train wreck. From the way he has handled Nash, to the Carter mess, to the joke of a contract he gave Wisniewski etc.... I think Nash will outlast Howson in Columbus.

Pronger isn't coming back, and the team has to plan as though he will not be. It would take a miracle at this point for Pronger to be able to resume his career at any point.

One change that I do think will come about in the next CBA -- with relatively little problem so longer as the player is paid in full -- is to eliminate the cap penalty on over-35 contracts where the player has to retire early (rather than go on LTIR for multiple seasons to avoid the cap hit) due to major injuries that could potentially end the careers of players of any age.

The current system does no one any good: not the injured players who are forced to undergo medical exams everyone knows they will fail before they can go on LTIR for the season and not the teams, which have to do a salary cap tap dance over situations such as Pronger's or Laperriere's that were no one's "fault" or an attempt to circumvent the cap by stashing a bad contract for a washed-up player under the LTIR designation.

I tried asking this question before but it was pretty much ignored except for a few responses that provided no real answer, so I'll try again. Although, a change in the CBA may make the question moot.

Would a team that is struggling to stay at the cap floor derive more benefit trading for a guy like Pronger and keeping the contract active (high cap hit, low current actual salary) than the benefit to the team that no longer has to tap dance through the summer such that the team unloading the contract receives the premium (a pick)? Would the team trading the player also be able to include cash in the deal to sweeten the pot? Or, would all of this be nullified by the league as an attempt to circumvent the cap?

Thanks

Kassian is a legit power forward in the Lucic mold. Will be dynamite once he's ready to play with the Martian Twins full-time.

Good trade for both teams, IMO.

If he turns out to be Lucic, its a good deal for both sides. Right now that is a big IF. Hodgson is already a legit # 2 center, with the potential to be a # 1 center. Vancouver is close to winning, what happens if Sedin or Kesler goes down with an injury? All of a sudden there is an enormous void in their lineup down the middle. A void the Hodgson can step in and fill right away. Kassian does add the sandpaper Vancouver needs, but he might be a few years away from being a difference maker for them.

The problem with doing that is is that it would be blatant cap circumvention that the NHL would strike down, and the player could never pass a physical after the trade.

Cash inclusion is no longer allowed in NHL trades.

Hodgson is likely going to be a very good player, but the underlying stats for him this season show that he's been sheltered. Getting a lot of offensive zone starts and playing against lesser competition.

He's likely to develop into a 1C, but he might not be ready for that role just yet (or even 2C). Interested to see how Buffalo uses him right away.

Well obviously with Sedin and Kesler he wasn't going to be a # 2 in Vancouver. He's still putting up solid numbers. Long term if Kassian develops even into a poor mans Lucic it's an ok trade for Vancouver, short term I don't think it helps them.

Vancouver saw how they were bullied by the Bruins in the SCF, and I believe this trade is an overreaction to that.

They named a bridge in Slovakia "Chuck Norris" recently. I thought that was hilarious.
