Correct. But some feel that ice time = depth chart.
BTW Shawn Horcoff is our best forward

~Ya, that's a pretty unresonable thought process, I mean those crazy coaches always play inferior players more often then superior players~

So when Belanger plays heavier minutes than Hall and Eberle that makes him better. Okay I get your line of reasoning.

Better?
Right now is Belanger a "better" NHLer than Hall & Eberle.
Maybe not for a long time, but now, yes.

Now, if you get H&E the right match-up, the right situation, they'll kill it,
I can't think of a situation where Belanger will kill it.

- Seldom Beaton

WTF does this mean? Belanger isn't better at much. You rank the top forwards in terms of who is best on this roster and Belanger is near the bottom.

Are they even close to the same? Gator couldn't skate or handle the puck worth poop. Schultz doesn't hit, if he can't skate or handle the puck we have Semenov on our hands again.
- Lahey

So he's more Scott Hannan style?

I actually like Steve Staios as a comparison. Not overly physical, but can be at times. Skates well and can move the puck, but doesn't rack up the points.

You cannot tell me that Spurgeon, Lundin, Scandella, and Prosser are all better defenseman than Schultz. Schultz plays zero PP minutes for one, and for two, Prosser was a (frank)ing healthy scratch last night.

You'll note I had better in quotation marks.

And, I was thinking about situational things, but never mind.
I'm sure as hell not going to spend time trying to argue it.
That's a Lose/Lose deal.

Carry on.

Why? Staios wasn't overly physical. He'd throw the odd hit and fight the odd time, but he isn't some sort of bruiser like Gator was.

Take the PP out and Shultz is still a #4 at ES. With that being said there isn't much difference from 1-7th., 45 seconds or so.

That sounds about right. I'm thinking a softer but smarter Smid.

What do all these guys have in common? they all played for the head coach when he was in the AHL that is why he plays them more then everybody else now.

In the summer, the copper and blue's Derek Zona speculated Schultz could be had for Smid and a 3rd.

Did we overpay?

- Morris

Very good question! I've been keeping high expectations for Smid over the past two seasons (for all the same reasons as Gagner). However, if this had happened before Smid's breakout season I would have cheered this deal while telling anyone who would listen how good Smid's going to be someday.
Now that I've seen Smid's breakout year, I believe Smid+3rd rounder is > Gilbert.
I am dismayed to see Gilbert going because I believe he would have been about to step his game up (not as much as Smid but as we took him out of a 1st pairing role I think he would excel more with the lesser ice time/qualcomp) but I can't think of a more perfect fit (who isn't a superstar, anyways) for our D. And talk about the perfect mentor for Smid! "Hey Smid - meet the guy we want you to be in five years!" His contract is great - I seriously doubt we could have gotten better value on Just The Defenseman We Need. Given how specifically Schultz fills our needs, I think Tambi did very well not to overpay for him.
Gonna miss Gilbert but the more I think about this deal the more upside I see. I'm tempted to go so far as to say we beat Minnie in this deal but I think I'll just wait and see.

So I take it Renny is telling us that Petry is better than Smid and Whitney and that Barker is better than Peckham and Sutton?

Oilers pairings going forward: Whitney-Schultz, Smid-Petry, Sutton-Potter. Gives shutdown guy and puck mover in each pairing...
- oilersfanatic

If i'm making the lines there would be a vet with a younger player pairing.Whitney-Smid,Shultz-Petry(gives petry more freedom to jump up into the play),and Sutton- Potter.Next year Potter will be replaced by Klefbaum.
