Looking a little deeper..
Has a lot less giveaways than Gilbert, almost the same amount of takeaways.
Will be second only to Smid in blocked shots
2nd on Wild in total TOI, again only Smid will be ahead of him in this respect
Leads the Wild in Sh TOI.
Can play both sides on D.
Conclusion? Lose some offence, TOI numbers about the same, large gain on defence and toughness. The type of guy they need back there. Like I said, I like the trade. - GuyLaDouche
Agreed on all counts. |

Hodgson with more minutes might be a Calder candidate. |

Do you actually watch hockey or just make lame comments?
It takes more than Minutes on Ice to be a hockey player.
Schultz is the NHLPA rep for the team and is the leader in and out of the locker room. As quoted by Cal Clutterbuck "he is the face of the Wild."
And when a player playes 17 games does not make him a better defenseman than a player who plays 62 games it makes him a call up.
By the way just for your Knowledge the average mins by the Wild defensemen are:
Spurgeon GP-60 ave TOI- 21:39
Scandella GP-44 Ave TOI- 20:49
Zidlicky GP-42 Ave TOI- 20:38
Lundin GP-17 Ave TOI- 20:12
Prosser GP-32 Ave TOI- 19:49
Schultz GP-62 Ave TOI- 19:36
Falk GP- 37 Ave TOI- 19:34
Zanon GP-39 Ave TOI- 18:37
So by your thinking the Wild just traded their #3 #6 and #8 defensemen in the last week or so. I see Schultz was 6th on the team for TOI. Yet never plays any P/P time. - longbottom
What's your point? His coach plays a lot of guys more often then they played him. That's what I said. |

My point was you don't start calling a guy a third pairing guy when you don't have a clue what the hell your talking about. Maybe before calling a guy down try and look into what he is and what he does. I think Laheys comparrison to a younger Staios is very apt. |

It is what it is LB, his ice time tells us the coach had as much, or more faith in other guys then they did in schultz. |

Its a rookie mistake, all good. He will get a ear full for it, when he heads to the room, him and Hall. Plus they need to get yelled at to wake up, there starting to slow down. |

Yup the time on the ice tells us a lot.
He can be a solid 20 minute/game guy...
Smid, Schultz and Sutton are the Def Dmen.
Petry, Whitney, Potter are the puck movers.
Smid.Whitney (or Petry)
Schultz.Petry(or Whitney)
Sutton.Potter
Personally I like the move for the same reason as most...gets a more Defensive Dman in the lineup... |

Its a rookie move, he will learn from it. Another one is Nuge flying in front but he decides to go for the fancy pass instead of the shot. He had prime real estate to score, but he decided to pass. Hopefully the coach gives him a ear full for that too. |

Petry is not a rookie, Nuge is...Petry has played almost 90 games (this is his 90th)...35ish last year...rookie season is over.
That is basic hockey....get teh puck out of your own zone...simple...cheeses me rite the fucl< off...brutal bone head play...

Ok Ill reword it for you little boy, so you can understand what I mean. Petry is still a young player and learning how to be a top Defence men, he is going to make mistake that make him look terrible like the one that just happen. And it is ok that he dose as long as he learns from it. |

Watching the up and down stye our forwards want to play, i cant help but think a steady, strong skating defensive dman will be way more useful than gilbert |

I bet that guy wants that one back. Petrell must have a heavy shot, because that look so bad. |

I am not sold on Gilbert. He was good once for a season. However he has a huge upside. He could be good again... he could be an offensive threat and thus have some trade value.
However I just can't agree with this trade. I would junk punch anyone that said this was a good idea. 3.5 million and 2 years if I remember correctly on Nick. I haven't had a chance to check though. I did get a chance to look at his number on this defensive dman. -10 this year? On a team out performing Edmonton. Gilbert is -4 on the second last team? Soft goals or no soft goals, I think that speaks for itself. In fact Shultz is -26 over the last 4 years and negative each year on a team that has done relatively well.
If my math is correct Shultz has played 16 less games on the better team and Gilbert still has roughly 6 times the points he does.
I am up for dumping gilbert but there is NO REASON to take Shultz. You are better to buy him out or trade him for a fourth round pick if you can't get better. There is no dman that edmonton has in the AHL that is worse than Shultz and 3.5 million is insane. Only thing I can think of is that Tambellini is planning on quitting edmonton in the offseason and wanted to stick it to them. |
