Stoll is a career -11 I believe. Might want a little better.

Wow. That's the reason you wouldn't want Jarrod Stoll?

JVR Carle 1st

Nash > JVR at any point of JVR's career going forward

Carle walks at the end of the season so might as well cut losses

1st is a throw in to thank clb for giving us voracek and couturier

At what point do you pull the gun away from Howson's head?

Come on. Nash isn't an impending UFA/RFA; he's signed to 5+ years and Howson doesn't HAVE to trade the guy. The only way Nash goes is if he gets blown away. Despite what the media says, Columbus would be fine with trading away Carter and bringing in some youth.

That being said, why the hell would Howson want Carle, an impending UFA who will go for the best pay day or best chance to win, neither describe Columbus' future.

So JVR+1st for Nash? Not going to happen. And we're still trading youth + draft for a player with a cap-engulfing contract. The flashiest player isn't always the best fit...

Judging by Kubina's interview, he seemed personally offended when Tampa traded him. He also mentioned staying in Philly after this year. He *could* just be playing the right cards as an impending FA, but something tells me that he doesn't like change and just wants to keep things normal (perhaps he's a family guy?) That being said, he may be willing to accept a cap-friendly deal here.

As for Grossman? Who knows. Young and deserving of a raise, you never know what could happen. Add in Carle's instability, and we need to keep one (or both) of Grossman and Carle.

Lastly, any reason why we don't see this starting 6 being back next year? Assuming Pronger is retired, Carle can receive his expected raise. And once Timonen's contract expires, he will retire or likely sign a more cap-friendly contract. At that point, we have his cap-hit available to sign a guy-of-the-future. I don't see a NEED to go after a Suter this year, unless our D looks horrible down the stretch. I think we may be set for the forseeable future...

- steelydan

Agreed. The veteran presence that Kubina brings will help. At least I hope it does. Obvs he's not replacing Pronger outright in that dept. but every little bit helps. I think I'd be fine with the 6 we have going into next season with MAB and Gus pushing from below.

You have at least 4 roster spots opening up next year

Leighton
Lappy
Betts
Backlund

so roster spots will not be a problem

The club is only allowed to have 50 pro contracts, this is why Kalinski was "thrown" in with the Kubina trade.
Right now they are at the 50 limit. Their are other offsetting roster things with ELC (slide rule).

Agreed. And that's why I ranked them the way I did.

Interesting that most guys had MAB and Gustafsson ranked as high as they did.

Is the general consensus around here that both these guys are close? If Kubina and Grossman don't re-sign here are we okay having MAB and Gusty in the 5-6 slots to start next season?

- rockychocbill

No, but that doesn't mean they can't be ranked higher than bartulis walker and lilja

Let's hope the Phantoms fold then. This way we can get even more roster spots open.

Kind of funny looking back at this blog from nearly six years ago. Obviously, I didn't know much about Bryzgalov's colorful quotes (in any language) back then.
