What sucks about that contract is that Holmgren is going to get out of jail free card with the next CBA when the get the amnesty buy out clause everyone is talking about.
- akane13

Holmgren throws these huge contracts around, and seems to be able to get out of them. He's already escaped Richards & Carter... might escape Prongers, and if there is an amnesty out, can escape Bryz's.

It will be interesting to see if there is an amnesty cut that can be made. I don't see how there should be, unless the cap is decreased. I know some people have been discussing that the cap might be reduced because the owners will fight for a smaller share to the players, but I can't see all of the owners getting on board with that.

That is some grey area that I don't know... I mean, he would still need to have a bonafide injury to be put on LTIR, but at what point does it become obvious cap circumvention. Say he has concussion symptoms for the next 4-5 years... sure, he might be unable to be "cleared to play", but was he going to play at 41-42 years old anyway?

Definitely an interesting discussion.

- rival22

I think what they would do is either buy him out or have him stay on LTIR for the rest of his contract. Look at what they have done with Ian Laperriere. He has been on there for two years now for the Flyers. That way I think Pronger gets paid yet he doesn't go against the cap.

I kind of think that it's bullpoop that GM's can get an amnesty buy out. If you gave a guy a bad contract you should be forced to suffer the consequences. Like the Rangers with Redden, they shouldn't get the cap relief because they put him in the AHL, they should still have a hit of $6M it's their own fault that they gave him that horrible deal.

maybe its just me but i also feel like this really screws over so many teams as it will remain hard to keep their stars. what is to stop say toronto from offering someone such as stamkos a huge huge deal, only to not have it count against the cap while the actual money is no issue at all

I really wonder how Wade Redden feels about his deal... By the time his deal is done, he will have played 4 years in the AHL, and his hockey career will be pretty much over. I know it's a ton of money, but do you think he'd rather have been able to get released, and have a shot at playing in the NHL again? He's not a terrible player, just a terrible player at $6.5 million.

Do you know what the return is ? I sort of viewed Avs as a seller even though they are just a couple of points out of the playoffs.

Downie is an RFA after this season, so it might actually just be a "hockey trade". Haven't seen the return yet...

To Min: Paul Martin, Tyler Kennedy, Eric Tangradi, 2nd Round Pick

To Pitt: Devin Setoguchi, Cal Clutterbuck, Marek Zidlicky.

We get a Top 6 forward in Setoguchi, a hard hitting 3rd/4th liner in Clutterbuck, and an experient defenseman who already played with Michalek in the Czech National Team and can move the puck well.

We'd be taking back $1.4 mil cap salary than giving up though. And we'd be getting the better return. Don't see it happening.

I can see ownership wanting that too. The cap has gone up to a point where the floor is now greater than the ceiling was after the lockout. The economics of the league are fascinating in an odd way, but the Have's or rising to the top again as the ceiling goes ever higher.

I am now hearing TB has traded Kyle Quincey to DET. Working on details but sounds like Quincey to DET for a first-round pick. Verifying.

Interesting... Kyle Quincey is worth a 1st round pick?

You would be amazed if you only knew how Clutterbuck and Setoguchi are not liked THAT much in Min. Some have lost their patience with them.
Anway, Zidilicky's contract is up in 2013 and Setoguchi/Clutterbuck have very good deals.
If $1.4 mil is the problem just add another player from our roster.

Believe it or not, Kennedy has some value around the league

Matt Duchesne just tweeted "Good luck in TB" to Quincey. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how this one plays out.

I will admit that I know nothing about Kyle Quincey, but this sounds like Detroit doing a favor (with a 1st) for an old friend in Yzerman. Sort of surprised that Tampa seems to be throwing in the towel - the SE is VERY winnable. Maybe they think it's so bad that they can still win it without Kubina/Moore/Downie.

Damn, TB now has 2 1st round picks, and 3 or 4 2nd round picks (one is a Panther's option from the Kubina trade).
