I think they have a pretty good idea before they make the deal. People talk, GM's talk, agents talk. No good GM gives up assets without having a decent idea how the scenario is going to play out.

So we'll assume Bowman knew he couldn't resign Grossman..

Doesn't mean a thing until the ink hits the paper.

Cannot assume that you are going to sign a player like that...you'll get burned pretty fast that way.

- HawkFan27

Ughhh, not if you have confidence in your GM.

Theres no doubt in my mind Homer will lock Grossman up. I'm glad he got him now instead of dealing for his rights at the deadline. He has until the summer to lock him up now.

Or that Bowman didn't think Grossman was worth 2 draft picks.

The lack of moves thus far is due to such high prices being asked amongst the leagues GM's.

We most certainly overpaid for Grossman. Given that we had a few extra picks, I'm okay with it. Idk how many picks your team has off the top of my head in the next two years, so maybe Bowman didn't want to over-pay.

Or he thought Grossman would go a bit further to the deadline, and was waiting for the price to go down.

Are Hawks fans aware that apparently Mark Eaton has asked for a trade out of NY?

Absolutely worth it, as long as Grossman is re-signed.

What makes anyone think the price would have been Saad??

Missing out on Kubina was disappointing. I'll agree about that. But, come on. Kyle Quincey?! Was he the defenseman everyone was pining over!? I wonder how many people have actually seen him play? Not saying he's bad. But he's not a top 4. He's similar to Steve Montador in my opinion. A 1st rd pick is not worth someone who would be a #5 (at best) defenseman on this team.
- coldsteelonice

Apparently Detroit thought he was worth it. That pick will most likely be near the bottom of the first round. I guess it depends on what a team thinks it needs to help them address their weaknesses and how much they're willing to give up to do it. As I said before, Quincey isn't great, but I think he's a better player than you give him credit for. Detroit adding him to their roster, certainly doesn't weaken them, nor do I think they mortgaged their future in any way to get him. Adding Quincey wouldn't have been all the Hawks needed to do, but I think he certainly could have helped them.

The Fudge Packers were a bigger FAIL then the Bears this year. Not sure what your talking about.
- Lido_Shuffle

Yeah, I'll take a Super Bowl Championship and a 15-1 season over no Super Bowl and an 8-8 season, thank you very much.

Which once again means nothing until the ink hits the paper.

I can think of so many "rental" players that the teams tried to sign and they went elsewhere. It happens every single year. I wouldn't give up a prospect like Saad for Grossman for the hopes that the Hawks could re-sign Grossman at the end of this year. Just not smart.

There's risk in everything. If every decision you make is based on 100% certainties, good luck ever getting anything accomplished.

Wonderful! Bowman just dealt a guy that could play on the forth line in Chicago that can hit for a center who is smurf!

- EKolb13

Is this trade a pro contract dump to free a spot for another one? Hawks were close to the pro contract max I think.

Unless other teams are really that down on the Hawk prospects.

Monday is the trade deadline people.......before everyone rushes to judgement on Stanbo relax and wait until 2pm next Monday. As far as people crying into their cornflakes about Kubina please stop.....the myers/miller for kane/crawford is nonsense......miller is 31 and very well could be on the downward track of his career.....myers, since his award winning rookie season he has been inconsistent and even boyton bad at times. So you are basically trading inconsistent for inconsistent.....if it is not a sure way of making your team better why make the deal. To analyze this proposed trade even deeper the two key elements....kane and miller......Kane has yet to reach his peak level as far as age.....and Miller is at the end of his and has been abysmal this year......Myers was injured for half the season but for the first two months he was a train wreck as he was last year during the first half.........some of us do watch hockey outside of Chicago and I for one would be petrified is this deal was ever made.

I forget who said it, but supposedly it was rumored that the Stars wanted Saad in any deal with the Hawks that included Grossman.

You can connect the dots.

Saad> than a 1st round and a 2nd rounder the following year.

So in essence Dallas received
less.

Making a deal as a reaction to someone else making a deal is a good way to make a bad deal..

I'll wait til the deadline and make an informed, educated decision instead of losing my poop over Kyle Quincey.

- pri$ey

Seems a reasonable reaction; wait and see what our GM does. And like you've already said, the time to give Bowman his final judgement will be after the upcoming draft and free agency period. It isn't easy to see a nice young defenceman go in a trade that you (as a fan) were prepared to make, but you have to assume there is a method behind the perceived madness of the organization. You just don't know. Bowman could grab Stastny in the next 6 days and then you'd have to understand why Quincy wasn't taken. Have a little bit of patience and try and understand that there must be more to the bigger picture.

He's a pretty 1-dimensional dman. I would have traded a 2nd. 2nd and a 3rd was a tad pricey. Not a gross over-payment though (no pun-intended).

And if, in fact, this is what StanB(l)o(w) thought, he was very wrong.

SteveRain, I feel bad for you -- I forsee you banging your head against the wall a few times as you wait for your playoff ticket money to be refunded to you timely.

Because Detroit goes out and gets him tells me all I need to know about what he brings. Good thing Datsyuk isn't playing tonight otherwise it would be an utter buttkicking.
- hawks2010

FACT: Detroit has never made a poor trade in the history of the team. I'd bet Ken Holland's golden Magic 8 Ball on it.

I don't know about one dimensional, but he's certainly not flashy. He brings some physicality and can play an effective PK...both dimensions the Hawks are sorely lacking.

The Giants won the super bowl THIS year. And it doesn't matter if you are 15-1 or 8-8 if you don't win the SB.

Well:

Toews "injured" - scratched.

Datsyuk "injured" - scratched.

You don't suppose....
