For playoff needs: Gill is a good pick. He brings a lot on the PK. He defines the word Veteran

Not so good: He is old, slow, 0 offense capability.

Trade overview: Preds over paid. Boom, Slaney and 2nd rounder is to much paid for a player that is very near the end of the rope

Montreal have a chance to better 2 young guns for many years to come and that 2nd rounder is a steal.

The only way this comes near to something balanced is if the Predators makes it to the Stanley cup final this year.

I would like to see that happen for the Nashville franchise but my money is not on them in the west

The irony is that this statement comes from an Islanders fan. We should be feeling bad for you, not the other way around...

Dont feel bad, if our arena situation gets resolved, then everything else will fall into place.

Funny, bc if i recall last years playoffs, Rinne stood on his head for Nashville to move far into the playoffs, an alot of the playoff games Nashville won was bc of Rinne, not your goal scoring. Thats the reason why u lost bc not enough scoring.
So think what u want, stick with your stats an good luck.....bud

- Ur Not Me

Maybe you need to check some stats. Here are the scores from the Anaheim series last year:

Game 1: 4-1 Preds
Game 2: 5-3 Ducks
Game 3: 4-3 Preds
Game 4: 6-3 Ducks
Game 5: 4-3 Preds
Game 6: 4-2 Preds

No lack of offense or goalie standing on their head in that series, but don't let facts get in the way of your opinion.

Nashville lost because the Canucks were better. Who in the hell scored bundles of goals against that team? I can see that I am dealing with a child. Go back to watching Hello Kitty.

Very smart move and what seems to be a pretty cheap price

Ok....now the real question.....

this would give us 8(?) D-men on the active roster? Is Ellis going to go back down now? Or is there another trade in the works?

I see this more as 2 different trades (there is a 5th round pick coming back to Nashville). So really it was Gill for a 2nd rounder and Geoffreon and Slaney for a 5th. Overall I think it was pretty fair. Boomer's days in Nashville were done. He was not going to get back to the big club unless someone got injured. I see this as a classy move on Poile's part by trading him to Montreal (where his family has so much history) rather than holding on to him and letting him rot in the minors.

I don't know anything about him (outside of the bloodline of course) but see he is 24 already and hasn't really cracked the lineup. Just curious to whether he is a legit NHL "Prospect" at this point.

I couldn't ever figure out what it was with Boomer; he scored a hat trick against Buffalo last year in one of his first games in the league, then only got 3 more goals since then. I think he came into this season a little complacent, like he already had his spot on the team. I mean, the guy won the Hobey Baker so you know he can play. I think he just needs to get his head on straight and realize it's not going to come easy for him.

Good guy and I wish him the best.

I don't understand how the Preds "overpaid" by sending Geoffrion and Slaney. Yes, the second-round pick is considerable, but on the other hand, Geoffrion went down to Milwaukee early instead of staying with the big club. Slaney bounced between Milwaukee and Cincinnati of the ECHL. I hope Blake makes it with the Habs. But the Canadiens won't get any help from Slaney, and the trade fills a position of need for the Preds, not the Habs.

In essence, it's a second-round pick for Gill and a statement from Poile that it's going to be a little harder to get past the defense now. Do they still need help up front? Sure. But the defense just got bigger, and that's a key issue addressed. Right now, any team making a trade is going to "overpay" because there are only four teams 10 points or more out of 8th (BUF, CBJ, EDM and CAR) and a bunch of teams with a pipe dream of making a late run.

So your "overpaying" will likely turn out to be market value with the landscape as it is now.

Bonus points for keeping Gill away from the Red Wings and Blackhawks.

Good pickup for the playoffs and a replacement for Weber next year.
- Gerk

Do you actually watch hockey? First, Hal Gill doesn't even come close to sharing any of the same qualities that Shea Weber exhibits.

Second, Shea Weber is an RFA after this season.

It probably means Hillen gets bumped. Don't see Ellis going back down at any point. Josi might be more likely IMO.

Hillen or Josi sit. I see no reason to leave Ellis out at this point. He still has work to do on his game, but he has done will so far.

I really like Ellis. However, there's also the games played thing to keep in mind. What's the magic # of games played before that counts as a full NHL season, and get's him closer to free agency?

Robert Slaney was an ECHL player when he was with Toronto, the habs fans are excited about him, and a maybe future 3rd-liner? And a mid to low 2nd rounder, I don't think that's an overpay

If he Preds are thinking about that, shame on them. This is a win now year. Not saying that they should torch the future, but this is their best shot at EVER winning the Cup.

Maybe. Like i said, I REALLY like Ellis, but I'm not sure if him being in the line up or not is really what will put us over the top this year. Should be an interesting couple of weeks ahead.

What Nashville fans should be pissed about is how we used a 2nd rounder on Blake in the first place. Clearly just a PR move that could have been a decent prospect.

Oh I agree. But if he can produce on the PP (which Gill, Cube, and Klein do not), I think he is worth keeping. He has shown he can be responsible in his end to this point.

I'm not too upset about the pick. We needed all the good PR we could get back then.

Well, going into the deadline Poile was looking for 2 things:
1) More depth and size on the blueline
2) Top-6 forward

Got the first part done, now for the second (and hardest part).

You should target the bit tits or maybe a guy with playoffs experience like Withney.

Maybe, but I'd wish they'd find someone under contract for another year or two, and not another rental. Need to keep Suter and Weber happy.

If Weber and Suter dont't like what they see then don't let the door hit them on the way out...... As much as i like them both. Im not going to ruin my future by them dictating on what we need to do.

I'm gonna say it again: Vrbata. Please oh please let Phoenix hit the skids so they start looking to dump payroll ahead of the sale.
