I think he's got like 700k left against the cap this year. I know Read is special but we got Schenn we got Couturier, Giroux, JVR, Hartnell isn't old, etc. Having all these scoring guys isn't putting us ahead of Boston or the Rags. We need to start adding some defensive forwards. Gaustad is 30. For a guy who does what he does we could easily expect him to play at that level for another 6 or 7 years. Read is 25 he's got what maybe 10 more years at best? This team is lacking that shutdown center that can play big minutes we need that almost as bad as Pronger. If the move can be made to get the 3/4th line center we need I'm sure that it's a lot more feasible to do than getting Pronger's replacement.

Gaustad isn't a shutdown Center, nor is he a player you want playing big minutes. He's a good role player. So it makes sense to trade a potential 30 goal 25 year old 2 way Winger for him? When I'll also add that Gaoustad will be a UFA on July1? Gaustad is an average at best 3rd line Center, who is probably more suited as a 4th line Center on the Flyers. Gaustad made 2.6M in his last deal. Is he going to take a big pay cut to come here? Because the Flyers certainly aren't going to pay that for Gaustad.

Yes sir. Put it in the Suter fund!

I definitely wouldn't let resigning Jagr get in the way of acquiring Suter.

He has been acting as a coach at practice recently. Betts won't be playing for the Flyers.

It's a shame I think we are missing him more than a lot of people realize.

CapGeek @capgeek
#NHL #Flyers could add ~$4.9m in AAV(s) at #NHLTD. Should demotions occur (Sestito, Gustafsson, as an example), space increases to ~$6.3m.

Holmgren has some cap space to work with, I hope he doesn't get trigger happy just for the sake of making a trade. If nothing makes sense, just stand pat.

The Franzen goal Cobie was clearing the porch but he left Franzen because another guy was wide open because a forward didn't rotate back and get him. Yes Cobie poop the bed there but there was more bed poopting before that happened.

Gotta fix the simple things first.

Talbot lost his check on that play. Which happened twice for Talbot in that game. Giroux also missed an assignement on the Datsyuk PP goal.

Then there is still no help on defense. Would I like Nash. Yes, but the only way i would like him was if Briere was moved, that way we could still get a defenseman or 2.

He's a good team glue guy. His chronic shoulder injuries have really hampered his faceoff ability. When healthy he was a useful player.

Correct. Not really a small fix, but a big factor that Read is on a EL deal for 900K a year for two more years after this one. That deal doesn't makes sense on any level.

How long before the Devils jump the Flyers in the standings? I actually think it would be better if the Flyers finished the 6th seed.

I don't know, Read is the kind of high production/low cap hit sort of player you need around, especially since he's signed at what, 900K for 2 more years? He's also pretty good in the defensive zone as well. I don't think I necessarily overvalue Flyer players (I'd like to think I'm somewhat unbiased about it), but if I'm moving Read all things considered, I want a much better player back.

I get what you're saying about maybe wanting a Gaustad type player though

The Flyers, being a max cap team, can't afford to trade away talented young players on ELC's. Especially not for pending free agents.

4th in the Division is a distinct possibility at this point. I think the record the first few months was fools gold.

I just hope the Flyers don't drop behind Ottawa into the 7th seed, that means first round exit most likely. # 6 seed Flyers can win a round, build some momentum, then who knows.

Didn't you say earlier you wanted a center to play 20 minutes a game? Well Gaustad averages between 15-20 minutes a game. He is a PKer and is a beast on Faceoffs something we could use. Yes he'll be a UFA but do you think the Flyers can't resign him? I don't think he's average either but even if he is we need at least an average guy on the 4th line. I don't think Couturier is cut out for that spot and would be better utilized playing up on the 2nd or third line.

Makes no sense to trade Read for Gaustad. Read is the better player and for less money.

I get the impression if we traded for Nash there'd be enough cap room cleared up even without Shelley being waived. More than one somebody would be going the other way.

Yea, the only semi-safe playoff position is the 6th seed. Otherwise you playing either Boston, Ranger, or Penguins. Not First round match-ups I would want.

I'm sure a package could be worked out to get Gaustad+ but right now I'm just saying we need to deal from strength to fix weakness. The Dmen imo are getting caught trying to fix a lot of boo boos by the forwards. Also I'm using Read as an example if that is way too high of a price then surely we have something of lesser value buffalo would be interested in.

He's a very solid player. I watched the Hawks/Nashville game this morning, and Suter was tremendous. He was better than Weber last night.
