From Matt Barry's blog:

"So, I guess when Helene Elliott writes and tweets that, "Kovalchuk to the Kings is 98% done" she should be called a muff diver because she got it wrong?"

Have I been using the term 'muff diver' out of context all these years?

Sometimes I wonder if Ek's "sources" enjoy just giving him these outlandish and nonsensical rumors just to see if he'll pass them on....

Source one talking to source 2: "I'm going to tell Ek that Nash for Penner, Bernier and Hunter is a done deal!!!"
Source 2: "He'd never post that, would he? Even Ek isn't that gullible"
Source 1: "Keep in mind that he and some guy names NH4442 are all over those Hemsky to Pit rumors I keep floating"
Source 2: "Very True, probably about time for me to float another Hemsky to Pit for Martin, Dupuis, and a pick rumor"
Source 1: "Ek and NH will be all over that like KGR on Fossil!"

Nash is fantastic but if he wants to play with Sid he'll have to wait until 2014. We are probably at the very bottom of the list when it comes to acquiring him (not that you didn't already know that).
- Gunner Staal

yeah i understand. just the amount of criticism he receives is unfair. how many so called superstars would do much better there? that being said i know his contract would cripple the team so we will never know

just for conversation for anyone who may be around.... if you could have the pens trade for one player that has not been mentioned by anyone. can reach a little, because you never know the magic shero can swing, but at least keep a little bit of a reality check in it. any thoughts?

all this nash talk... 2 things.

1. Nash played like garbage with Crosby in the Olympics. it seems like it's a bad example, but Nash doesnt play the game that we need from a winger on Crosby's line. He is a world class talent and i would love to have him, but if we are going to sell the farm, we should go get another world class winger better suited.

2. What about Zach Parise? Parise is scheduled to be a UFA and someone that i think would be willing to come here. He said he wants a winner and someone willing to pay him... the Penguins could EASILY fit that bill.

Parise i could see get 7 million. Neal i say could get 5 million per year, or maybe even a staal deal of 4 million... or somewhere inbetween. So where is that extra 8-9 million going to come from? Martin is traded for 5 million back. Niskanen could come off the books for 1.5 million. Kennedy wont be resigned for 2 million... we could do it. it would be interesting and shero would need to be creative... but i would rather go after Parise and keep our assets rather than go after Nash and sell the farm.

just my two cents.

corey perry. he and crosby played with Patrice Bergeron back in the 2005 WJC and they were probably the greatest line in WJC history.... Perry would be amazing.

but i say never count out Shero. who would have thought that he traded for Hossa? He got him for almost nothing. he has Lemieux and Burkle's support and both of them are actually very into the hockey operations (Burkle pushed for Hossa)

so this is the organization that could pull off a major deal out of no where. I think we would expect that kind of thing in the offseason given how our team is playing, but you just never know with the Penguins and Shero... and i like that.

im sure somewhere nash would fit on this team. he is too good not too. however, you are totally right about not pursuing him. as much as i love him, whatever assets it would take and even more so his contract would be brutal. i think parise would be ridiculous with crosby, i just ultimately dont think the team would be able to make it work money wise.

yeah... it is great to have a team that isnt afraid to go after a big fish, but at the same time doesnt pull a sather and just hand out giant deals to everyone that destroy the team. corey perry is an excellent choice. i cant see the ducks moving him, but i think he would be worth it if they could pry him out.

i just feel that the addition of a player such as perry or parise would all but guarantee that either staal, letang, or god forbid both, would be forced to move on

i disagree. i think a lot depends on crosby's new contract. if he says the same or takes a pay cut, that gives us more to work with. if they could get a guy like perry or parise, then you would bet that crosby would be willing to take a pay cut. he wanted to redo his contract for them to keep hossa.

but martin would be the one to leave first. there is no way that letang goes anywhere. i could see staal moving on at some point. he wont want to be the 3rd guy on the team forever.

yeah. i was operating under the notion that the cap was staying the same and sid wasnt taking any discounts. if he is a big enough team guy to take 2 mil or so less a year to give to a new winger then that certainly helps. assuming you move martin, thats a lot more off too. i just see neal getting around 5-6, when tanger is up he is going to want 6 at least too... even without getting a new winger, if staal wants much of a raise he will be moving on, which sucks because he is crucial

OK but you have to make me a deal. After the deadline passes and Hemsky isn't on this team you can't say his name until the offseason.

Deal?

Sidney hands down.

When Malkin plays well he's phenominal, but when he's slumping he slumps and nothing else. When Sid's slumping (even if you can call it that, since he's still better slumping than 99.999% of other players), he doesn't just fade away like Geno, he still makes everyone around him play better and produce, even if he's not. No matter what Sidney contributes to team production, even when his is down.

But when Malkin hits the wall, he's totally out of the game. He can't make or help others to succeed when he's not. He really gets lost in himself when struggling. He dwells in it and his all around play is completely stagnent because of that. While Sidney makes supporting the players around him his focus in that situation.

Brian Metzer (former Pens blogger here) brought up a player that has not been discussed on our board, David Jones. I know he has a knack for goals, I would have to watch him closer to see if he has the compete level that Bylsma's system is going to dictate.

I think it would be nice if Crosby and Malkin both dropped to 8M/yr which would free up 1.4M. They still get top dollar and team gets a little more freedom. I wouldn't say it is probable but I wouldn't rule it out that their next contracts have a better cap hit than they do now.

I'd be "just satisfied" if we could bring one of those two packages:

Grossman/Burrish
Gill/Moen

On the other hand I'd be "very pleased" if we could unload Martin's contract and acquire Allen/Ruutu at the same time.

Edit: Make no mistake, I really like Martin's game not so much his contract. He's earning U$1 million above what he's worth.

Too bad. He has penguins hockey written all over his game (and pretty much 70% of the league)

How about Chris Stewart? Any thoughts what it would take to get him?

Stewart is obviously in a down year however given what the Blues had to give up for him, they are going to drive a hard bargain for any potential suitors, if they even go that route.

The Blues are doing great right now even with him slumping. Imagine if he wakes up at all. If I were the Blues I would just keep him for now.
