I kind of expected it'd take something with a cap hit of $7m for the Flyers to get Suter in free agency.
- BulliesPhan87

Yeah, I think if he goes to UFA the Flyers will have to pass as they can't afford to spend that kind of money. Unless they make another move.

And if the Flyers sign neither....?
- stveshdy

Then they will likely have to look hard at the trade route in the summer.

I think he's worth considering and pursuing in the summer, if they decide to take this to free agency. He's certainly not the only option, but he's definitely worth consideration.

Not saying he isn't, but I think the realistic chances of the Flyers getting him drastically decrease unless they make other moves. Anything is possible.

As long as Oooooh, Shiny! fills a need, I'm cool with it.
- Jsaquella

In my mind "oooh shiny" is overpaying for someone who doesn't fill a need but is just, Oh wow! We can get that guy?!?!?

The thing is, Suter is a good defenseman, no question. But is he worth paying $1.5mm or more over what it costs to keep Carle? That I'm not sold on.

If Suter resigns with Nashville, he no longer has a say in where he goes, unless Nashville wanted to trade him in the future and he has a clause in his deal. I don't know how much further I can explain that your scenario wouldn't happen.
- MJL

Couldn't the Flyers ask for permission to speak with him/his agent to maybe get something ironed out and then officially signed when a trade happens...asking this for pure academic purposes as I don't want to beat a dead horse.

I think he brings more of a physical edge and powerplay prowess, so it might be worth considering. Assuming Carle's value is 5mil, I think Suter's value in the open market is somewhere ridiculous at 7-7.5mil and I would have to agree with you that he is not worth that kind of money.

Nashville would be ill advised to approve of that. They have no assurance the Flyers and Suter don't iron out a contract to sign at free agency, then say, "Thank you, good day,"?

He is better, but he's not going to be Shea Weber or Duncan Keith level good.

Yeah, but can you ever trust an agent's word haha? I guess that's true though, probably wouldn't make sense.

Exactly and I feel he will be overpaid because I think the Preds are going to really try and keep Weber. Not to say they won't try and keep Suter as well...just think Weber is higher on their priorities and Suter might walk if he doesn't like NSH's outlook for future seasons as he expressed would be his rational at the ASB.

Their word, I suppose, is only what it is, but I don't see Nashville doing something disadvantageous for themselves like that.

Won't happen. Look at it from the perspective that Nashville doesn't want to trade Suter.

They can afford it. They can also do things to give Suter what he wants, and lower the AAV if they choose to.

Yes, he is worth it. I would pay Suter that extra money over Carle. I read the article that says how close they are but in my personal opinion, I think Suter is a much better all around defenseman than Carle. The numbers say that their close but you have to look at the system and teams they play for. Not knocking Carle just stating that Suter would be an upgrade.

The example sorta relates to Nash. If he were playing in Philly I think his numbers would be better than his current stats in Columbus.

Now the question is do you think they can sign him?

I wouldn't pay Suter that much more, because he's not that much better. If it was $6mm for Suter vs $5mm for Carle, fine, take Suter. Much more than that, though and the cap differences aren't worth it to me. And I like Ryan Suter a lot.

What does the system and the team they play for have to do with it?

Do you think he would break 70 points playing with Giroux?

I'm not advocating trading for him.

Bryzgalov will be better for the Flyers. And that really has zero to do with Nash.

I'm just saying that just because a player has performed in the past doesn't gaurantee his performance in the future. Often moves for big money free agents don't work out.

I'd be extremely confident that if Nash was to come to the Flyers, he would do very, very well here. No doubt about it.

and I'm just pointing out that a lot of people felt the same way about Bryz. So far he hasn't. Hopefully he will.
