I am saying he already signs the extension and then the trade happens, if the numbers make sense I think it would definitely be worth it as the Flyers would have him for the rest of this year.
- flyers20032002

If Nashville resigns him, they aren't trading him. The only reason they would trade him is because they can't resign him.

There doesn't need to be a bidding war. You just gave up a big piece to trade for him. He becomes a UFA on July 1. Who holds the leverage? He can name his price. I'd say give me 7.5M a year or I walk. The Flyers are in a position to have to do the deal, or give up what they traded for him for nothing. How is that a good negotiating position? In Free Agency you can say no thanks to his demands and lose nothing.

Correct me if I am wrong, but can't the Flyers go to NSH and say:

"Hey, we're willing to part ways with JVR, but we want Suter with an extension signed for x amount of dollars before we do it."

I think this can happen and this is what I had in mind.

And I see no chance we trade for him at the deadline. We'd have to make them an offer that makes them a better team for this year's playoffs, I'm not interested in that price. Anything involving the Flyers and Suter comes after the playoffs.

No guarantee you get him in the UFA market and you might be able to get him for a better price on the extension end as well. You also address the need this year, so I think it might be worth it if the numbers lined up.
- flyers20032002

What free agent have the Flyers traded for that signed for a discount? He knows as a UFA he can probably milk $6.5mm or more out of somebody, probably somebody with as good an opportunity to win as the Flyers.

Also, if Suter's not willing to talk deal with Nashville, why would he suddenly jump to sign with the Flyers?

I just hope Holmgren has a plan and that it does not include, "ooooh, shiny!" as a part of it.

Even if he wants to be moved? I think it could happen, he'll probably test the free market though.

How is it more appealing? Ridiculous press corps running amok, more scrutiny, unfamiliar surroundings. He's been happy in Nashville and has friends on the team. Also, if Lidstrom hang 'em up and Detroit comes calling, I doubt he'd sign somewhere else.

Team that scares me the most when bidding on Suter in the summer is Detroit. If Lidstrom retires (and the Wings all ready have cap space) there is no doubt they are going to do everything in their power to sign Suter.

If Suter resigns with Nashville, he no longer has a say in where he goes, unless Nashville wanted to trade him in the future and he has a clause in his deal. I don't know how much further I can explain that your scenario wouldn't happen.

see post right above you.

Chicago would concern me, too. They will almost certainly be looking to add defense this summer.

Not to mention, unafraid to trade a recently signed long term contract. Not to say the Flyers wouldn't be an appealing landing spot for a competitive player such as he.

Couldn't you say that about most organizations in a high-profile setting? I don't buy that as a reason not to come to Philly...you take the bad with the good

Detroit will scoop him up. Thats why im torn with what the Flyers should do with Carle.

It's not really unappealing, but if Nashville's going to spend to be a contender, it's not exactly a poophole.

I'm in favor of keeping Carle for the right price. If he's willing to sign for $5mm, I think they have to consider it strongly. Especially if Suter's getting $6.5mm or more

I kind of expected it'd take something with a cap hit of $7m for the Flyers to get Suter in free agency.

I would be willing to do that bc of Timonens contract will come off the books the following year.
