I don't think Johnson is what Cbus is looking for. They need a goalie first and foremost, a 2nd/3rd line player and they could honestly use another 1st.

The Flyers should be on the phone right now trying to pull that deal off. A 1st and prospect for JJ is a steal. Age, Contract, Potential, Need he fits every area. He may not be the best defenseman but that doesnt mean he cant get better.

it would be like this

to la: 1st and a prospect
to phl: jj

to la: carter
to jackets: la's backup a 1st and a prospect

Why trade Johnson to Philly, when you could probably trade him and Bernier for Carter and a defensemen? Then you get a scorer and don't open a hole on the blueline.

The Kings have the room to take a cap hit of over $3mm(full year hit) right now. There's zero need to trade Johnson for cap room.

I think the Flyers are kicking tires on their defensive options before signing him. I'm sure they both have numbers in mind already, but if they want a guy like a Suter in the offseason, Carle has to go.

No doubt about it.

Yes the rumor was Carter to LA for Bernier, Stoll and a 1st.

Obviously the JJ move is to create cap and to recoup a 1st. In a year with a deep defensive draft it's a smart move.

La is only doing that deal if they are landing Carter. They have to get Columbus' deal done first. Flyers may already hav the deal done with LA, and are just waiting for Columbus to make a move...

If this deal does go down I would have no problems with it from a Flyers stand point.

I don't think Columbus is trying to land JJ's contract tho. I really don't. They're also not going to get a first back from Columbus. They would from Philly.

If that's the deal, the Kings don't need to move any money to make it work.

If they make the first trade, there's no need to create cap room. Trading Stoll and Bernier clears $4.85mm in cap room. In addition to the $3.6mm they have now, they can easily fit Carter's $5.27mm

Ek so take it for what you will. It's a much smarter deal than he normally comes up with which is why I'm slightly more inclined to believe it.

Yes, but the Kings do not need to create cap room if they trade Stoll, Bernier & a 1st for Carter. Why trade Johnson? To recoup the 1st? That's dumb to do at the dealine. Adding a scorer in one deal and then trading away a key defenseman in another at the deadline weakens your team before the playoffs.

Its good to see the Flyers break away from the fancy east-west plays that have been getting them nothing lately. If you noticed, most of the goals came from driving the net, getting deflections, and shooting the puck instead of waiting for the perfect play. Our team is built more for hard work, and speed then it is for finese. Lavi must have heard what I was saying the last couple days...

Why trade a key roster guy for a 1st rounder BEFORE the playoffs? You add Carter, then immediately weaken the team by trading a 22 minute a night defenseman for a future pick? That would be stupid.

With Kimmo in the twilight of his career, and Matt Carle a pending free agent; if the Flyers are going to make a big splash for a defenseman, I'd really like it to be for a "complete" two-way defenseman. Which Jack Johnson is not.
- bradleyc4

The Flyers could still make other moves as well as acquiring Johnson. When Timonen is done, they have over 6M to work with.

Not to mention, he's your 2nd best offensive defenseman (when you're trying to add offense).

I like this time of year, just wish people would take 5 minutes and go to capgeek and see the math & then think really hard about why both teams would make a particular trade.

If the Kings are trading for Carter, there's no reason to turn around and trade Johnson to recoup the lost first. Johnson's signed for another 4 years or so. If they want to move him for a first, they can do it at the draft.
