Yeah unless the nhl let's a flyer shoot from the blueline and simmonds gets to stand in front and try and deflect it on the shootout attempt he has no business being in the top three shooters.

how about still trying to put your best skilled guys out there anyway.....you know, just in case we want to try to score. as soon as simmonds came up I put my head down. I knew it was done. Lets save Giroux for last so he doesn't even get the opportunity. i believe in going with your best first. And you have Schenn, Jagr (I don't care if he doesn't like to do it), Read, Voracek, Couturtier who I'd pick before Simmonds. he scores most of his goals 5-10 feet in front of the net on rebounds and tips. for (frank) sake

I'm just guessing here, but I would think that the coaching staff has a pretty good idea of who is best on the team at the shoot out. I don't think it's as much about being able to make a great move as it is performing under pressure. All these guys can score on a breakaway. They are all highly skilled. The hard part is doing it when the pressure is on and all eyes are on you. Maybe the coaching staff feels that Simmonds has the intestinal fortitude to handle the SO. He did score on that "banana" SO.

From adversity, art. And once the downtime's through, the gif storing capacity will be more than doubled, to the chagrin of sci-fi haters worlwide.

IMO, you have to go with who's hot at the time the shoot out rolls around. It doesn't matter how many shoot out goals you score in practice (especially when Bryz is the goalie ha), if that player isn't feeling it that game. Not sure what Simmonds shows in practice, but in games, he's the type of player that capitalizes off of in game situations. Works hard, forces the puck into opportunistic areas. He gets a lot of his goals in tight and off deflections, so it's odd to me that he gets picked for the shoot out when I think there are better options.

Only thing I really believe in the shootout is that you want to shoot first, but that's just me.

The Flyers attempted 86 (!) shots last night and put 45 of them on the net, so it wasn't like they were reluctant to pull the trigger. The PP generated plenty of good puck movement, too, but just couldn't bag a goal. The first unit couldn't get shots through, and the second unit couldn't produce deflections/rebounds but did have a few chances from the slot.

The most frustrating thing about last night's game was that the top line in particular had all sorts of scoring chances from the first period right through overtime and just couldn't finish any of them. It happens.

The most frustrating part is no one on this team is willing to take the puck to the net. They skate around the peremiter and wait for fancy plays to open up. I can understand cycling the puck, but sometimes you just need someone to take the puck to the net a la Tavares, or Grabner... Just skate it in, and shoot. Stop waiting for a trailer, stop skating down the boards and drop passing. Start playing North-South hockey and less East-West.

When you keep playing the same way it is easier for teams to game plan and take away your fancy passes. They are happy to let you shoot from the perimiter all day long... See Flyers from 3 years ago... Thats why good defensive teams, and good goalies give the Flyers Fits... see Ranger & Bruins.

I am not sure IIRC, but the I think the Islanders are one of the best shootout teams over the past few years... oddly enough.

Nooooooo, not very good in the shootouts. They should go back to the tie format

Regardless of how he's been scoring, Simmonds is as hot as anyone on the Flyers team, if not the hottest.

I remember watching that game. I believe Gary Thorne had the call with Clement. I have no idea how the players did it either. If I am correct ESPN said that players were eating bacon in between the periods.
- Gunner Staal

I never heard that (where would they have gotten bacon) but they said they went through the dressing room trash to find pizza because there was nothing left in the concessions.

IMO this team needs a shake up. Get these guys to charge the net.

Read-Giroux-Jagr (Read has no problem shooting, going to the net)
Hartnell-Briere-Voracek (Maybe Briere and Hartnell reignite a spark)
Schenn-Couturier-Simmonds (All these guys will take the shot)
Sestito-Talbot-Rinaldo (checking/shut down line.)

I agree, which is why I'd hate to be a coach in the shootout. I'd want to play who's hot, but I still don't know if Simmonds is the right choice. It's kind of like shooting in the dark. The way Nabokov was playing, didn't really matter who they put out in the shoot out.

If I were looking to shake things up, I might try putting Briere in Jagr's spot on the Giroux line.
