Im not including Kimmo in this.

However there is a reason why the Flyers have let in as many goals as they have this season.

This D core imo has clear questions about how they protect their own zone.

Defense is a team game. Take Boston's team defense backed up with the goaltending they get, and put the Flyers defense there. How do you think they would look? Do you really think that Boychuk is that much better then Meszaros or Coburn? The only difference is that without Pronger, we don't have a Chara. Who may very well be the best defenseman in the NHL. I really don't know why goals given up by a team is soley the responsibility of the defenseman. Far more so then the defenseman on this team, the team GAA is due to a below average forward core defensively, and subpar goaltending

You definately would have to.

The offense of this team should be willing to take a hit. You deal from an area of strength.

Nobody knows if they are available but dont rush throwing money at JJ. He may very well be able to be obtained in the off-season. Explore the other options first. The Flyers will have to wait for the off-season to do that.

- flyer_nutter

He maybe available in the off season, he may not. He may be already traded. Talent like that doesn't come around too often.

I'd have no problem with acquiring Hal Gill. He has been very good in the post-season with Montreal. He and Gorges were the one's responsible for shutting down Crosby and Ovechkin when they made their ECF run in 2010.
- LordStanley88

Id look to Carkner in the off-season to fill that role personally. Although I dont think the money would be there.

I think Guss would be a suitable 6th d-man next season if the Flyers can add grit to the back end in other ways.

Should have been here last night. Both the Flyers and Bryzgalov were non competitive against the Islanders

I have been saying that for a long time as well. He could help out crease clearing, and blocks a ton of shots..

I traded for Gleason in NHL 12 and hes working out great on the 3rd pairing with Mez. Thats what the Flyers should have done.

Also.. the Flyers passed up too many shots last night. Obviously 87 directed toward the net was to few.

Which in reality we dont even know if he is available now.

Talent however always comes around.

I wouldnt panic and rush to trade for JJ because he's available. Any player is available under the right deal.

This is partly why I hate twitter, a guy posts that the Flyers are talking about JJ and immediately the wheel starts turning. I could really give a rats ass, would be much more content just watching the Flyers play and not have any of the other stuff in the backround.

Matt Carkner? He's mediocre at best, and that's being kind.

We don't know if he's available. It's just been rumored. It's not a panic to trade for Johnson. And no, talent like that on the back end doesn't always come around. That's what makes him intriguing.

For poops and giggles.

What would you do, and what would you roll out as the Flyers d-core next season.

Assuming Pronger is finished.

I would seriously try and re-sign Carle. I like Suter, and I think he upgrades over Carle. But is he worth the extra 2M over Carle? Not sure he is. At some point the Flyers have to get some young defense in here for the future. And if they can add Suter or keep Carle, I would add a low cost veteran for the 3rd pair. My focus would be on the future.

If the Flyers are going to lose Carle, they need a puck mover. Defenseman who can move the puck are paramount in today's game. The overwhelming majority of the game is played passing and handling the puck.
- MJL

indeed. the Allen/gill types are easier to acquire

mike green is a huge plus player so i can assume he's one of the best defensively sounded players in the league right?

Whens the last time people watched Jack Johnson play every single night in LA?

There's 30 teams in the League. And how old are all those players? Johnson is 25. And what did those teams have to give up to get them? There's a big difference between talent and elite talent in a young player.

So other than Kimmo, who is the Flyers' puck-moving D-man? Also, when is Kimmo's last year? Also, Do the Flyers have a chance to upgrade the defense if Carle decides to walk? Also, is Pronger expected to sit on LTIR for the rest of the career, at this point of his injury?

Not sure if you see a trend, but our defense is pretty much written in magnadoodle. Jack Johnson, a young defenseman with above-average offensive talent, completely makes sense in this team's defensive future. Either Kimmo retires after next year or signs for reasonably less. Carle will likely walk seeing as what the current market is for a #2-#3 defenseman. Pronger could have very well played his last game and spend the length of his contract on LTIR. All of a sudden, your defense is Coburn, Meszy, and perhaps Kimmo.

There is cap space, and there is room for a project like JJ on this team. If he develops and becomes more responsible than people give him credit for, it's a bargain. If he doesn't pan out, then a puck-moving d-man is always a commodity at the trade deadline, defensively-sound or not (see 2012 Flyers ).

Reasonable enough. I couldnt myself roll out the same D core as this season. With or without a better 6th d-man.

They need a change in the top four. Suter is very interesting, just very afraid of what kind of money he will want.

Big minus numbers every year hes played. On good teams. Its a valid worry. He can do a lot of good things. I'm just wondering how they would plan to use him/ who he'd pair with.

They need to add a player that is going to be the top D man for the future. That's not Carle. But you make the right move, not to just make a move. After next Season, Timonen comes off and gains them 6+M of Cap space. Who knows what's up with Pronger.

Take a look at Kimmo Timonen +/- when he was just starting out in the League in his early to mid 20's. He was a minus player every Season.

Talent is talent. The Flyers if they want to trade for a player will have to give up quality. Its whether that player fixes the teams biggest issues and if the money is well spent.

I have to go, going to be late for a night out anyway but I'll just end off with drawing it in the mud.

JJ to me, has a questionable attitude and work ethic. His contract is far too long for a player who doesnt have a complete enough defensive end to his game. He is too soft, and the Flyers need the opposite. Guys who bring a solid defensive game first and foremost and bring consistent snarl.

I dont throw money, and assets away to get a player like JJ.
