If it's true that LA is looking to clear Cap space and wants a prospect and a 1st round pick for Johnson. They won't take Voracek.

Can't have tunnel vision and just look at this year. Read is going to be a 30 goal 2 way forward who can play in a lot of roles and lot of situations. I don't trade Read unless it's for a return that I just can't pass up.

- MJL

Its not tunnel vission. Johnson is young, and the core of our offense is young. Read is a nice player to have... There really is no telling how well he preforms in the future... but to balance out this team a little, it would be a good idea to add a younger d-man like Johnson, instead of just trying to get Gill or Grossman, then being completely screwed next year when Carle leaves, and th Following year when Timonen leaves...

The #Philadelphia #Flyers are close to completing a trade for a defenseman. Could happen within next 48 hours. Stay tuned.. #JackJohnson

If one of your reasons to be willing to trade Read is because he might be playing on the 4th line this year, then that is just focusing on this year, and not the future. There are other avenues to fill the defense such as Free Agency. I think it's a pretty safe bet on how Read will perform in the future. In a Salary cap system, quality players such as Read on a low Cap hit EL deal are invaluable to building a quality team.

He doesn't even need to do that. He just needs to be examined by doctors (and if the league is suspicious, league-appointed doctors) to show he is injured.

Not saying they will all be available but the following are some RFA d-men who may be traded for in 2013, the year timonen robably retires.

Pietrangelo. Bogosian. Ekman-Larsson. Fowler. Shattenkirk. Alzner. Hamonic. Teubert.

Streit is also a UFA that year.

If Pronger is injured, they don't need to get out of it, he's on LTIR.

I guess the answer was yes.

- bodiva88

Understood. I'm not so sure the Flyers will just pay him 30 mil or whatever is left on the contract just to get out of the cap hit. If there's a buyout option in the next CBA, maybe they use it on him.

I didn't say that was the only reason, just one of the reasons... And your contrdicting yourself with the Cap hit. Yes Read has a Low cap hit, but then you have to get a defenseman in UFA... How much do Defensemen in UFA cost of Johnson's Calibur? Thats not cap friendly to replace your defense with UFA's. Johnson has a Cap friendly hit for what he does... Its a Cap friednly deal for another cap friendly deal.

Correct. There is a mistaken belief that a player on LTIR has to show he's trying to play. That is not the case. As if Pronger just showing up to practice facility for a visit is showing that he's trying to play anyway.

The guy has huge minus numbers on good teams over the last few years. That's alarming.

Whats he do exactly?

Move the puck?

Not be an an ass but the Flyers need physical stay at home d-men. Not puck movers. Playing DEFENSE is not the strength of JJ and thats an issue for me.

As a previous poster pointed out, they'd be more likely to go for the cap room. And still get out of a contract.

I thought Coburn and Meszaros were that. And I still think if you land Johnson you still try for Gill.

It's not a reason at all. I'm not contradicting myself at all. I know the ins and outs of the Salary Cap very well. So tell me where exactly is the contradiction?

The Flyers have traded for Pronger, Carle, Meszaros, Coburn, and signed Timonen as a UFA. They built the defense like that before, they can do that again.

Personally, I think the Flyers are the type of Organization that will honor the deal and pay him what he's owed in good faith. Teams don't insure every contract, but it's very likely that the Flyers did so with Pronger.

Gill is a teddy bear to me.

Coburn is not your typical stay at home d-man, and lacks a consistent snarl to his game. They need a guy who will bring that most nights, and Coburn does not.

Meszaros well he can be a dominant player, and also play like absolute poop.

I'll put it this way, if Coburn and Meszaros are such good d-men, or they are solid stay at home guys, why is that still a huge area of concern. You spend your money fixing your biggest needs.

Adding JJ to me is basically like going out and spending money on a goal scorer. Sure it helps, but doesnt do enough to fix the biggest issue your team has.

If the Flyers are going to lose Carle, they need a puck mover. Defenseman who can move the puck are paramount in today's game. The overwhelming majority of the game is played passing and handling the puck.
