Other then Pitkanan who might not have turned out to be the great defenseman they were looking for, I dont remember the Flyers taking any high pick defenseman. Maybe a late First....

Sbisa was a mid 1st round selection I believe when they traded Umberger.
19th to be exact.

At the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, on June 26, 2009, Sbisa was traded with Joffrey Lupul and Philadelphia's 2009 and 2010 first round picks to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Chris Pronger and Ryan Dingle.

See we didnt trade all those players just for Pronger.

Nashville seems to have a knack for drafting dmen and the flyers could mess up a draft with a young Weber being available and draft the second coming of Brad Marsh instead.
The flyers do a good job of drafting forwards so maybe they could help out Nashville there.

Brad, Brad, Brad.....

Don't you know that everything, no matter how idiotic or mundane, is debatable in here?

PS. You can repost all my comments and you'll never find a statement typed out by me that suggests me saying something is not debatable.

I thought the pecking order was:

Starting Goalie
2-way Defenseman
Power Forward
Offensive Defenseman
Sniper
Defensive Defenseman
Playmaker
Back-up Goalie
Grinder
Agitator
Enforcer
2Real

Too early to say Sbisa is a bust. They were saying Flyers were unable to properly draft D-man, I just mentioned they havent taken D-man early very often.

I actually like Sbisa. Still sad to say that Pikanen and Sbisa are the two best defenseman they have selected in the draft (past 10 yrs).

They obviously have spent more picks on forwards and sign/trade for NHL defenseman.

Yup. Doesnt help that they gave some of those picks away in trades. But Woywitka (27th), Pitkanen (4th), and Sbisa (19th) were all first round selections from 2001 on.

PROJECTED LINEUPS (subject to change)

FLYERS

Hartnell - Giroux - Jagr
Schenn - Briere - Simmonds
Read - Couturier - Voracek
Sestito - Talbot - Rinaldo

Timonen - Coburn
Carle - Bourdon
Gustafsson - Meszaros

Bryzgalov/Bobrovsky

I am really happy Briere is feeling better and ready to play.
I have a small concern that they are breaking up a line that has been their best one the last few games.

Schenn centering Simmonds and Rinaldo has been the only line to consistently get in on the forecheck, cycle the puck for extended time, and create multiple scoring chances.

Obviously Briere is much better player and scorer then Rinaldo.
But I think they are breaking up some good chemistry there.
Hopefully with Schenn on the wing with Simmonds they will continue that good hard work.

My guess is when Jvr gets back it will be Jvr/Schenn/Simmonds.

What to do with Briere, doesn't this come up every season just about?

I'm pretty sure after the way this year is going, the scouting staff is working extra hard scouting defenseman. Problem is its harder to know a defenseman's true potential at the junior levels. Any defenseman taken in the top 15 has a good chance at being a good defenseman, after that IMO its a crap shoot... 50/50.

They took Woywitka at 27 in 2001. He didn't work out too well.

Its pretty bad when your best home grown d-man of the last 20 years in Chris Therien. Say what you want about Bundy, he was a solid partner for Rico for a lot of years, and played 764 games in the NHL.

But I sure do wish they had done a better job of drafting d-men over the years.

well they traded him his first year into pro career:

Jeff Woywitka, 2004 1st Rounder (Robbie Schremp) & 2005 3rd Rounder (Danny Syvret) for Mike Comrie

then

Mike Comrie for Sean Burke,Ben Eager,Branko Radivojevic

I think in the near future, we will see Briere transition to wing. Both Schenn and Couturier are better than Briere defensively and I think at some point Briere needs to move to the wing for those 2 to take their game to the next level. I also think it sets the team up with their best options down the middle when considering the offense and defense.

They turned him in to something which is true, I was merely commenting on the pick itself.

Other Dmen of note drafted after:
Fedor Tyutin
Christian Erhoff
Kevin Bieksa
Dennis Seidenberg
Marek Zidlicky

Pretty crappy draft for d-men...
