His deal was way more likely than throwing in a 2nd and kulemin for a 1st overall pick....

Besides, they could flip salary to another team to stay under cap.

How about this for a trade between Columbus and Toronto;

To Toronto:
Jeff Carter
1st round pick this year

To Columbus:
Tyler Bozak
Carl Gunnarsson
Nik Kulemin
1st round pick this year
2nd round pick this year

Here is why this could be possible:

For Toronto - Bozak would be expendible with Carter coming in. Gunnarsson is a good, solid D but we have too many and someone has to go (no one is going to take Komisarek plus his cap hit is too high / Franson's salary is too low since both teams are close to the cap). Kulemin is a good strong forward who is having a bad year but again would be expendible. More importantly, these players make the total salaries going either way almost even (about 200k more going to Toronto).

As for Columbus - Carter is easy to explain. But why the 1st pick (1st overall as well)? The top two players in this year's draft are Russians - small market teams don't do well with Russian players (see Radulov & Filatov). So to help Columbus "save face" Toronto would take the 1st overall and draft Yakupov (who would then take Kulemin's spot next season). Columbus gets a decent centre, a top 6 forward and a top 3 D, plus a 1st this year and a 2nd to offset everything. Also, Toronto is taking the massive long contract off Columbus' hands, so they have to give them something decent.

CBJ will be good next year, Next year 1st Line will be Nash - Brassard - Johansson, everytime Nash and Brassard are on the ice together, they are producing. 2nd Line will be Hamberger - Carter - Yakupov. If you watched WJC20, Yakupov had 0g - 9a, Carter will have lot's of shot missed, lot's of shot saved, lot's of open net missed and lot's of goals.

I guarantee though that if Columbus drafts Yakupov, he goes back to Russia or demands a trade within 2 years.

Small market teams have a hard time keeping players interested in the team. IE Turris.

Forget about the rest of it, I wouldn't trade Kulemin and Gunnarsson straight up for Carter.

EDIT: But now that I think about it, Columbus's first round pick makes it totally worth it. That's also why this deal would never happen, they won't trade that pick.

Nobody going to take Carters long contract my sources told me. Nash asking price is to high according to my other sources.

That wouldn't work because big market teams could spend to the cap ceiling and guys like crosby etc would go to those teams because NYR TOR MTL would pay them like 25-30 mill per season cuz they dont spend that much on tier two players
