An example of what I'm talking about. If a finesse soft as tissue paper player like Gaborik would fight back against an enforcer like Carcillo, you can damn well guarantee Volchenkov would answer if challenged.

- PLindbergh31

Then why hasn't he? How do you explain that he has fought twice in his NHL career. Search the memory banks and a game against the Flyers when Volchenkov was with Ottawa. And he ran Gagne. And Gagne challenged him? What happened? Did Volchenkov answer? What did Gagne get? Instigator, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, and Game. Volchenkov did not receive a fighting Major, why? How many facts have to be given?

But post a Youtube video of two completely different players. That'll clear it up.

Does he have the NHL's interest in mind, which is to have good called games, or does he have the interest of the officials? From a fan's perspective, some of these guys are absolutely brutal. If I sucked that badly at my job, I'd be fired. Add to that there's 2 on the ice...

He works for the NHL, not the Officials.

Wrong again. As always. Referees jump in before fight can start. My work is done here. Getting old owning folks.

Seriously? Your own video proves I'm right. Carcillo challenges him, and he skates away. Gagne jumps him and Volchenkov turns his back to Gagne and shows no intent whatsoever to fight back.

Now there are visual facts to back up my opinion. Well done.

I referee college hockey on Long Island, teams like NYU, SBU, Albany, Monmouth so I'm by no means a pro official. I do it because I enjoy it and it's a good workout. And a good game by an official is one where he is not heard from. I know that isn't always easy, but I'm just appalled at what happened today. Some of those calls both ways were atrocious. Youre taught as a ref to be absolutely certain while calling a penalty that puts a team down 2 men. The guidelines are generally considered a goal scoring chance taken directly away or the penalty leads to a chance. Additionally, on hits from behind, you have to judge if the player has put himself in a vulnerable position. Its a bit gray unfortunately. Personally I would have probably called the coburn one over timonen just for his sheer stupidity, but knowing it was Clarkson(diver), I would have thought about calling that one as well. The Giroux one is a no brainer.

It's just pathetic how guys gotta fight after clean hits ...Volchenkov simply doesn't see any reason to fight just because he plays tough hockey...he would fight if need be

it's clear as day that Volchenkov backs down from that tough guy Gagne, who's skull is made of paper mache.

When the video shows Gagne and Volchenkov, the referees are already on the scene and breaking up the altercation.

It's clear as day on the video you posted that Volchenkov shows absolutely no intent whatsoever to fight.

Turns his back and drops to the ice when Gagne jumps him. And he skated away from Carcillo and another Flyer who challenged him.

I for one am sort of glad this game happened the way it did. The Flyers are a team that needs to get smacked around a little bit. I expect them to come out pissed tomorrow. I would rather have them get spanked by NJ(who I know we can beat and own in the playoffs as of late) and whoop the Rangers(a team we mentally can beat).

Well at least they built some momentum up for tomorrow and showed no quit. Horrible first 2 periods nonetheless.

Definitely a game that can provide some motivation for sure. And maybe they can come out ready to play tomorrow. One good thing is other then Giroux giving up on the play on the Parise goal, Giroux played a very good game overall. So maybe he get's it cranked up again.

Yes, take the positives and carry it into tomorrow. They were a very frustrated team before the 3rd. Even with the loss, much better to end that way then to just lie down.

Absolutely. Forget the first two periods. Take the good. Glad I missed the first two periods, myself.

That was after a goal. If you saw on the left side of the screen, Briere made a bee-line to Volchenkov to pounce on him after the goal?

I don't mean to be a douche, but I know the Flyers are labeled for being dirty, but I thought they had at least some class. Hartnell's episode at the end of the first combined with Rinaldo's slewfoot was outright embarrassing to watch. Combined with Simmonds punching Volchenkov twice during that episode?

Was an interesting game. Devils dominated first 2 periods. But that 3rd period was probably the worst period for the Devils all season. Right after there best 2 periods. Physical game for sure.

Interesting that the two trades Lamoriello made Foster, and Ponikarovsky are paying dividends. Foster has a rocket for a shot, and Ponikarovsky is a useful player. I think he has four 20 goal seasons. Both of these guys were acquired for a bag of dogpoop.

Foster with two goals today, and Ponikarovsky with the game winner. Amusing.
