Nils Ekman to Minnesota? - Gunner Staal
I forgot about Nils...
I was actually excited when we got him, that didn't last long. |

edit- Pens gave up a 2007 2nd round pick that ended up being Will Webber, from good ole Gaylord High School in Michigan |

That same draft in the 5th round, 129th overall- Jamie Benn. Oops.
Pittsburgh draft picks before Benn that year:
Angelo Esposito
Kevin Veilleux
Robert Bortuzzo
Casey Pierro-Zabotel
Luca Caputi
Alex Grant
and after Benn, Dustin Jeffrey. |

He came from SJ and left the ice during mid play. Never saw a player leave like that before. Can't blame him he did break his elbow. |

I love tracing back draft picks to see where they came from and who they turned into...
Ekman was traded along with goaltending prospect Patrick Ehelechner to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a 2007 second-round draft-pick.
Pittsburgh acquired that pick with Niklas Nordgren and Krystofer Kolanos from the Carolina Hurricanes for Mark Recchi on March 3, 2006
That second round pick was traded a couple more times and eventually used by the Flyers to draft defenseman Kevin Marshall. One pick before Eric Tangradi.
So, the only team who made out on the whole Nils Ekman chain of transactions was Carolina who won the Cup with Recchi |

So do I. My favorite is the year Getzlaf and Parise went, that year was absolutley stacked. I love seeing the names that went after the Islanders took Nielson at 6 or 7 |

I just looked, it was actually Robert Nilsson the Islanders took and it was the 15th pick. Ahead of the likes of Parise, Getzlaf, Kesler, M.Richards, Perry etc. |

At least they did better than the Rangers did in the first round (Hugh Jessiman at #12). |

How about how two teams had two picks in the first round of that draft (Ducks/Flyers). Both did a pretty great job. |

Yea they did.
So without looking it up who knows how we got to draft Fleury 1st when we had the 3rd pick?
PS- I have the answer because I looked it up, I didn't remember... |

We traded the #3 pick obviously but I am drawing a blank on the other part of the equation.
Edit: After looking it was like "oh yeah!". |

I remembered trading up with Florida, but I had to look up what exactly the trade was. Great move by Craig Patrick there! |

The Florida Panthers trade the 1st pick (Marc-Andre Fleury) and 73rd pick (Daniel Carcillo) to the Pittsburgh Penguins for the third pick (Nathan Horton), the 55th pick (Stefan Meyer) and Mikael Samuelsson.

Penguins can thank the fact that Florida had their franchise goalie in Roberto Luongo at the time, and weren't going to be taking Fleury. |

Well they did the same thing the year before when they also had the 1st overall. Traded it to Columbus for the 3rd +. They took JBO 3rd and Columbus took Nash.

I wonder who the Pens would have gone after if they didnt do the Fleury thing. Tough to say now that we are in hindsight. Getzlaf would be my hindsight pick. |

They could of screwed up and still made out like bandits in that draft. But the fact that Zherdev went 4th, Jessiman went 12th and Nilsson went 15th makes me glad that we will never know the answer. |
