That's the whole point. We don't need beat writers to supply us with facts that are a 3 second google search away from getting ourselves. Or a quick hop on over to NHL.com. If your labeled as an "NHL Insider" then give us some inside knowledge. Tell me something I don't know. Falls woefully short of the mark. Most of the nonsense that quickly becomes reality among the fan base, comes from the biased spin of the reporters covering the team.
- MJL

It just seems to me like such a waste of the first and most exclusive access to the team available. And it's a wind under the wings of negative rumors when you have three beat writers putting the same flavor out simultaneously.

Same phrase he uses in disbelief of a penalty call. It does get old.
- tangent_man

And they're going to call THAT a penalty!!

He's a very solid PxP guy, so long as he stays away from the hackneyed cliche stuff.

There's a clear example on this site. Look at the insight and knowledge that we get from Bill. You read what he writes, and you say, he really knows the game. I may not agree with everything, but certainly a very high percentage. You don't get that feeling from reading the Beat writers. And Bill doesn't have daily access to the team, nor does he do it full time.

The problem is, as soon as a guy gets a job as a hockey beta writer, the casual fans assume he's got a deep knowledge of the sport.

Carchidid was a high school sports writer. Randy Miller was a baseball guy. They simply parrot what Panaccio says.

He's OK. Maybe it's just been too long and he's he's finally gotten to me, but I could sure handle a new style behind the mic.

And I think that from when he first started, you can see clearly the influence that has affected Seravalli from Carchidi and Pannacio.

Miller lost me during the all-star game. "If I wasn't a hockey writer, I wouldn't be watching".

Got news for you, Randy - you aren't what I would call a 'hockey writer'.

He was seduced by the dark side of the sports, and took the quick and easy path, as Vader did

Oh I like Jim Jackson... He's voice is kind of soothing to me... Could you imagine having emerick doing all of our broadcasts now? Ugh... Like nails on a chalk board... SPEAK THROUGH YOUR MOUTH, NOT YOUR NOSE!

i rip doc but i do respect him

did anyone catch the Rags/sabres OT last night. Hagelin came out of the box to go on a break and Doc sounded like he exploded into flames while making the call. It was hilarious

I cant stand him and his lackey.... Its just not play by play... It more like lets discuss Crosby or Ovechkin while a hockey game is on, and mention the goals after they are scored....

i used to like Doc...but after each player he has to give a short bio of him...sorry i will pass on the history of the player. Better yet, i will look him up if i need to know that information. Just simply do play by play...
i sort of like listening to the Wash. Caps play by play people...they did the AHL All Star Game...Laughlin (sp?) cracks me up most of the time, because he really doesn't sugar coat too much.

i actually like he's informative would you rather listen to jack edwards or the guys in washington complain about every or the same calls throughout the game?

i would rather have them do play by play not give me a history lesson or talk about someone that is not on the team that i'm watching.
Every color man complains to some degree, i think that's their role.

I will mute any game that Jack Edwards is doing....

the guys in LA complain about calls for both teams if it's warranted and even comment on good calls for both teams

I dont mind information, but not during play. It like him an Odjick (sp) sit there and have a talk about the game while it's playing... No respect for the game... Do play by play between the whistles, and color commentary after the whistles.
