They've stirred the annoying "Flyers are lying about concussions" thing when Claude Giroux was not yet diagnosed with a concussion. They've put quite an effort into highlighting Bryzgalov's struggles, after their "victory" in the whole fiasco over the Flyers asking Bryz to tone it down. They punctuate shootout losses with a routine of blame assignment. Even when Laviolette does something as simple as try different lines, you get this stupid articles like "Why blow it up?"

And it's not just the articles. It's the dramatic tweets, the opinionated obervations at things like practice, and it's the second questioning at least half of every announcement the brass makes. It's made worse by a sore lack of thoughtful hockey analysis.

EDIT: To clarify, I do not hold ASF in this opinion.

- BulliesPhan87

The Flyers have a horrid history with handling concussions so any foot dragging on head injuries has to be met with questions. every fan and every media outlet from CBC to 2Real has highlighted Brzgalof's struggles this season. The Flyers are what, second to last in shoot out percentage all time?

It's the new media, not the Flyers beat writers you're having a problem with. Make a new twitter ID and pick a team with a decent following for a week and follow their beat writers. You'll get an eye full of the same thing.

I can't stand Sam but over all I think they do a decent job for me. Maybe you don't want as much information as I want. If Simmonds crashes into the boards heavily yesterday I want to know because it could impact the lineup. I try to tune out the money talk though.

To be fair, Tim's role changed when he left PNI. He's not a newspaper reporter anymore. His beat is still the Flyers but he's working for what's primarily a sports entertainment network. He's required to be more columnist/personality than hard core reporter. I can see the change and I understand why that would turn people off.

Most of the complaints I hear are more about the way news is being reported now as opposed to the traditional way things were done. I don't like the shift either but I understand it. Reporters are interjecting themselves into stories now but you have to ask yourselves why. Is it because a reporter with an opinion and a personality has more opportunities in various other media outlets regionally and across the nation or is it because of ego? Then make your judgement.

Look at Bob McKenzie and, closer to home, Al Morganti. Both of them were staunch newspaper men, writers and reporters. Do you think either of them would go back to the beat and take the pay cut and lose the opportunities that their national personality has afforded them?

- mayorofangrytown

See, I understand what it is and why, or at least I like to think I do. I understand it has to be an approach that sells, and that it has to be compatible with multiple mediums. This isn't unique to sports media, either. The thing is, it's doesn't become less wrong whether it's due to ego or otherwise. Regardless, it comes across to me as lazy and unthoughtful. It's junk food reporting, and it really doesn't bring the fans closer to the team nor the sport.

As for Bob McKenzie, I think he operates with a considerable degree more thoughtfulness and respectability than Frank, Tim, or Sam.

I give credit to Holmgren, and the players. Past, present, and future. Because I wouldn't want to talk to them due to their incompetence. I understand that they have to, but I would take the approach of Laviolette on a recent media session.

I think you make good points here, but I really think Tim is off on some of his criticisms and points more often than not, but that's more of me disagreeing with his view than disliking him as a reporter. I just ignore him at this point since he seems to write for buzz rather than quality. I know he can do better than he has been because I used to enjoy following him in the paper and on HB back in the day.

If news reporting was based on quality rather than speed, I think we'd all be a lot happier with the people that cover the team. Too often it seems like a twitter race as to who can get information out, even if the info is incomplete. This is a world-wide issue though, not local to Philly beat writers.

I suppose this isn't something we can see eye to eye on. I'm not prepared to accept "it's the new media" as a full pardon for the poor quality of reporting. And the fact it goes on elsewhere doesn't change how I feel about it. These guys are the supposed primary source of information about the Philadelphia Flyers, and the product they offer is, in my opinion, subpar at best. I'm confident I will know how Wayne Simmonds' crashing into the boards will affect the lineup without that style of reporting.

Amen. Bob McKenzie is the standard all should be shooting for. Every THN article he wrote should be in the sports journalism textbook. Ken Campbell, TP, SC, FS, and the other writers I mentioned cannot hold a candle to Bob.

Only Bill Meltzer comes close - and that's a fact.

I'm not sure we disagree either. I think we just look at it differently. I honestly don't read entire articles anymore. I scan for quotes and stats and whatever REAL info I can find. I do that with twitter and blogs and news reports than I sort through it. I try to ignore the rest as the pap it is.

i share your view. not sure how much you follow the other sports but if you do, how would compare the quality and style of coverage to that of the local flyers media?

I just look for the pictures. All that reading is too much work.

Also, you should all be taken out behind the shed for omitting faketpanotch in your discussions of high caliber hockey writers and tweeters. FIAL.
