I think people also tend to remember the middle part of the movie and forget Bambi being shown as a spike and then later as the father of twins. Granted, most people could look at a deer with a good set of antlers and not know if it was male or female but back in 1942, when the movie was made, the U.S.A. was still an agrarian nation and more people could have told a buck from a doe at a glance.
