Highly doubt it.

With the auction that free agency has become, i wouldn't be surprised if he got more than 4M per. Leino anyone?

The way Backes plays the game is admirable. He gets paid for much more than the numbers.
- God_then_kovy

The kid takes over 150 minutes in penalties each year from playing an admirable game. Not really a knock on him, just saying there's a downside.

His agent will use him as a point fo reference, and the GM. should point out what else Backes brings to the table.

PG might not....

- HuileHab

No PG will and this is why Backes makes 4.5 and AK will make in the high 3s

I think the Sabres were seeing Leino as the missing piece of their cup winning team.

He plays with more of a physical edge than most 1st liners, and can net 30. I don't see what's not to like.

Not saying you or anyone else did, i'm just saying comparing Backes and AK's numbers for the sake of determining their value is a little too direct!
- God_then_kovy

It's not, thats how contracts are dealt. First the numbers, THEN the incentives.

Backes isnt being paid 4.5M because he plays an "admirable game".

Why does it have to disprove anything?

It adds to you saying that he has scored 30 goals by saying he has done it twice, albeit he offsets it with half of that production.

meanwhile the other guy averages 20 goals.

2 different players who get similar stats over an extended period of time.

There might be a couple still alive who would have one a few. And if you think this team isn't going to win a cup in the next 5 years you're nothing more than a Leaf hater. According to twitter and some posters on this site who are in the know, there's some trades going down...the blockbuster type they said. So you worry about the Goat ruining the draft.
- weirdoh

oh I'm no worried, I'm pretty sure he will

Not much besides the fact that 150 mins in penalties from one player is a lot to kill... Wich is pretty much what i was saying in my first post.

He also happens to be one of their best penalty killers... cant do that if he's the one in the box.

No.
I want him to come back and get injured again, so they don't count on him for next year (like they did for this year) and plan to sign or trade for another top d.

IF we end up with Gomez setting up a Gaborik all season long, everyone here will forget how pissed they were today.

Come on people, tell me who else we were going to get for a 7 to 8 mil cap hit this summer?

You all need to calm down. We still have a good 23 mil left on the cap and I'm sure this isn't Gainey's only move.

The chances of seeing Koivu back just got slimmer, but Tanguay isn't out of the equation yet either.

In the grand scheme of things, we got better today at center. That is the bottom line. Take it step by step and see what happens. Gainey is no idiot.

Let's just wait a while and see.
