Well said. No question about it. The way to build a team in the cap era is through the draft.
- PLindbergh31

I agree. But by the time you develop your own defenseman most of the young guys are no longer young or are no long affordable. I would love to keep building through the draft but the Flyers dont make you feel good about who they draft when it comes to defenseman. Who have they drafted (defenseman) who has been really good?

Simmonds is coming along nicely since my ragging on him earlier this season.

I prefer adding a dman in Free Agency, instead of dealing assets that will create holes in the lineup. If healthy, JVR is a top 6 forward, he would likely have 20+ goals right now if he hadn't been injured and this JVR for L. Schenn stuff wouldn't even come up.

Who would you like off this list? Filter by age. Not a lot off guys I'd like this off season. At least under 35 years old.

Hey, you can't say he wasn't motivated by it.

EDIT: I did say "right now". I never said "in general". I always thought he was a very serviceable role player.

That's certainly an issue. They haven't developed any homegrown Dmen worth mentioning. Chris Therien would probably be the most notable.

RE: a Suter trade
I'm never ok with trading a young player for a guy that can walk. Probably a bad example cause Dallas won the cup and Calgary hasn't but I look at Iginla in Calgary. Williams in Carolina. and in today's salary cap NHL when you can't just "buy" teams, I really hate giving away young talent for guys who can walk.

Would love Weber, question is can they get him under the cap next year?

- nastyflyergirl

Typically you dont make a move unless you know your going to resign him. Or if your not sure, then you include a conditional draft pick in the deal. But again, when your dealing for a high profile player like Suter, and giving up alot, the GM will likely ask permission to speak with the player before the trade happens to see if there is room to negotiate.

I'm not against the idea in theory, I'm just not as high on L. Schenn as others are.

Thats my only concern when drafting defenseman. The Flyers do a poor job of developing their own guys for whatever reason.

Sheldon Souray, Tim Gleason, Johnny Boychuk, Bryan Allen, and believe it or not Matt Carkner.

I don't really believe that. A lot of teams will deal for expiring contract with little regards to the ability to resign the player when it comes to pushing for a cup. I highly doubt a team like Carolina will allow teams to talk to Gleason, Ruutuu, etc before they deal them.

I like a few guys. Suter, Gleason, Stuart, Boychuk at first glance. I also think Wideman is a pretty good dman, he was scapegoated in Boston, but he's having a very solid year in D.C.

they also don't draft a lot of them in the 1st round. last 1st rounder they used on a dman was sbisa, and he's a pretty nice player. can't remember any other recent 1st round dmen the flyers have taken

Yes they do. Hopefully they can start doing a better job. With Pronger likely being done, and if they let Carle walk, they will have some money to get some things done.

I don't understand why a Toronto team that is desperate to make the playoffs are using L. Schenn as their 6th dman. It's not like they have a blueline full of Norris Candidates. The way for the kid to develop is for him to get extensive ice time, not hide him on their third pairing.

I understand what your trying to say but their are other teams who draft defenseman after the 1st round that are very productive. So why is it that those teams can draft well? The Flyers never seem to find a good defenseman.

little bit of luck, little bit of scouting, little bit of having good coaches in the ahl. in the flyers defense bourdon has looked solid for a young kid and marshall, while not quite nhl ready, looks poised to continue his growth. another reason may be that they're not motivated because the flyers bring in a lot of veteran dmen. hard to be motivated when you feel your chances of making the big club are slim.

Maybe the Leafs dont want to overuse him and stunt his growth. He is a very young defenseman. I look at Subban and he is asking to shoulder the load in Montreal with Markov out and he is falling flat on his face. Sometimes giving a young defenseman too much to handle can affect their play.

Yea but at the same time those guys arent going to cost you more then a marginal prospect and a draft pick, so if you lose out on them, not really a big deal... But when your talking major deal, like one that would land Suter, the reason it takes so long to get done, is because you dont make a move like that without knowing what its going to take to resign him, or if he wants to play for you at all...

Or maybe they don't want to expose him and get less of a return if they are indeed shopping him.

All im saying is if your going to trade JvR it has to be for a defenseman and the package has to be very good. The Flyers dont do a good job for whatever reason developing defenseman.
