either he trades him or he doesnt hit FA...Burke wont let him walk. If he got Liles for 3.8 (pay cut)...getting Grabo to sign for 4 I can see - senstroll
There's a character gap between Grabs and Liles.
Not saying grabs is a stereotypical Ruski, but Liles showed up here, and fell in love with the town, the system, the teammates, and trusts BB to help deliver a chance at a cup.
Liles has been a very pleasant surprise, and a positive influence for a very young D-corps.
Grabs is 27, and may not get another chance in his career to land a rteally big contract for insane money |

So...what I miss? We have Getzlaf yet!? - noename09
Jesus, NoeName, where have you been?
I sent you a PM at 11:00 am - you had 1 hour to approve the Komi, Finger and D'Amigo for Getzlaf deal.
You didn't get back to me, so I had to let it go.
They are trading him to Montreal for Gomez!
Why didn't you check your messages!!!!! |

On the open market yes.
That's why Burke has to convince him that the open market isn't a good choice lmao - Domaju
Burke:
"Listen Graboo... Suuuure you could get more money... Suuuuree you could get more ice-time... Suuuuuree you could go to a conteder that has a chance fo winning the cup int he next 2 years... Sureee you could get away from the pressure of toronto... Suree you could find a place with much nicer weather, where the girls are all over you constantly.......... I forget where I was going with this... "
we'll miss you Grabs |

I doubt it's a contender willing to dish out 5 to him.

With our current needs, and with our current situation, the best plan would be to move Grabo in a package while he has value and bring in something else that we need. |

With Connolly, Lombardi, and Bozak loked up for at least another year, and Colborne ready to get an NHL stint, I doubt we could even afford him at $4.0M |

Ok, I can see your logic however it still dosnt really work out well. For one, Connolly likely wouldnt be part of a deal, not too many teams want an injury prone guy at a higher price...too risky...and secondly, if we do sign Grabo he will want atleast 3 years meaning Colborne wont really have a place because Bozak fits nicely on the 3rd, we should grab a 1st line guy and Colborne isnt a 4th line player...so...unless we trade Colborne and resign Grabo, he doesnt fit...and does it make sense to trade a guy like Colborne in order to sign Grabo? No...not really.
- noename09
If we DON'T get a #1 C then it would likely be Bozak, Grabo, Connolly, Steckel for next year with Colborne in the minors. then the following year Bozak, Grabo, Colborne, Steckel. (with Connolly either walking or being traded at the deadline)
If we DO get a #1 C then it would likely be #1C, Grabo, Connolly/Bozak (who ever isn't traded), Steckel with 1 more year in the minors for Colborne. And since you don't think Connolly gets traded that would mean it's #1C, Grabo, Connolly (Bozak traded), and Steckel with 1 more year in the minros for Colborne, then the next year it would be #1C, Grabo, Colborne, Steckel. (with Connolly either walking or traded at the deadline).
Either way, I only see 1 more year in the minors for Colborne...UNLESS both Bozak AND Connolly get traded. If they both are gone for that #1 C than It'll be #1C, Grabo, Colborne, Steckel next season.
Those are the 3 scenarios I see if we were to resign Grabo.
And since there isn't really a #1C available via FA this summer I don't worry about picking up a #1C without having to get rid of Connolly or Bozak |

If we could somehow do it. My ideal situation for next year:
Flip Connolly, Komi, Lombo, Mac for picks
Trade Mac + picks from before for Ruutu
Trade Schenn for Some assets at deadline (Pieces for a package later)
Fire Wilson
Resign Kuli, Grabo, Gusty
Lupul-Colborne-Kessel
Kuli-Grabs-Kadri
Ruutu-Bozak-Frattin
Brown-Boyce-Army
Phaneuf-Gunnar
Franson-Liles
Aulie-Gardiner
Gustavsson
Reimer
Develop the picks/prospects and if Colborne truly can't fill that 1st line centre position, start looking hard into a long-term solution - mfreedman
I seriously doubt Colborne will have enough skill to be a 1st line center...just dont see it. 2nd line at best I think. |

And certainly not next year.
C'mon, my waffle friends - if he can't stick in the NHL this year, do you really want to build your plans for next year around him as the #1?
By the way, that was a rhetorical question. |

I would rather have Grabo at 4.5 then Connolly ... Connolly hasnt been the C we needed to slide in with Kessel and lupul... he created a log jam instead.
I think if Burke trades Grabs now, its for a much better return than we think |

I'm not ready to put Colborne into an NHL arena yet. He had 10g and 9a in the first 11 games (thanks Joey Crabb!) and since then he's had 3g and 5a in his last 20 games (where Joey go?)
Here's my logic.
If BB likes Colborne in the top 9 next year then he can pass on Grabo.
If BB lands the top centre b4 the deadline he can pass on Grabo.
If BB likes his chances of finding some top 9 centre in the summer he can pass on Grabo.
If Grabo is being a euro-douche and asking for too much coin he can pass on Grabo.
If none of the above apply ....sign up Grabo. |

I can't believe no team took a chance on Niittymaki...you'd think Ottawa could use some insurance with Auld sitting in the pipes, or perhaps a team could trade a tender and have Niitty ride out the string.
Weird, is he really that far removed from respectibility? Apparently he is...... |

I was surprised too. There's definitely some teams who could use some goaltending help out there, especially in the back-up role like Ottawa |
