They got a few great guys from the drafts in the 90s that have kept them competitive, I'm not denying that.

but since that?

Kronwall 1st round

Howard- in the 2nd round of 2003.(only 2 teams failed to get anybody of note in the 1st two rounds)

And Franzen... a 24 year old, who wouldn't even be draftable under the current rules.

and then? Just a whole bunch of role-players.

You also mention a lot of players they've lost... Hull(they didn't draft him) Ciccarelli(they didn't draft him) Yzerman(pretty hard pick to screw up... and really, really long ago), Fedorov- great pick, but it helps that back then, nobody was looking at russians, Larionov(they didn't draft him), Hossa(they didn't draft him), Coffey(they didn't draft him)...

The fact is, the backbone of their team came from getting guys from places nobody else was looking. They don't have the advantage of being the only guys scouting europe anymore. Take away the guys they've drafted since Datsyuk, Lidstrom, and Zetterberg, and they're still making the playoffs year after year and challenging for the cup.

They're good at adding key players through free agency and trade... and with that they can build a good supporting staff around those big 3... but their drafting and development since getting those guys has been average at best.

Their strategy has been to go high-risk high-reward in the draft... and its just not paying off as much anymore.

When you say "We pulled a detroit", you're talking about getting a steal late, and outside of those big-3... they haven't gotten much more than supporting players outside of the top-60.

- Feeling Glucky?

i didnt say they drafted those players i said they lost those players and had to replace them. we lost sundin, who did we replace him with? bozak? give me a (frank)in break.

and for the record, Yzerman was worth pennies when they got him, he was a 1 way player and they moulded him into a 2 way BEAST.

Just thought i'd chime in on the detroit drafting convo

detroit typically has an older team, so any kid picked post lockout hasnt had the chance to prove their worth.. the next 4-5 years should be very telling.. one thing detroit has a knack of is finding superstars where no one else is looking..

as the younger kids are brought into key roles in the next 3-5 years we will truly see if detroit is good at drafting.. or if scotty bowman was just that good at developing young players

mckegg in the 3rd round just may be a "detroit" type draft.

other teams have done it, i jsut think about zetterberg and datsyuk as the main examples, it doesnt get any better than that.

well said and i agree with everyones opinions.

time will tell how it all pans out, and i think losing Lidstrom within the next year or 3 will be a hard hit to take leadership wise for Detroit.

I'll be on a plane to Mexico this year. Touching down about 10 am local time - quick trip to the airport, check in, get the wifi up, dip in the pool, surround myself with all-inclusive beer, and sit back and keep hitting refresh on the TSN page.

Oh, it's going to be a good vacation.

yup.. to me.. the book is still out on detroit's drafting since none of the kids they have drafted since 2005 have really had the oppurtunity to be put into key roles

once guys like zetterberg and datysuk retire we will see how they've done.

so I proposed the trade:

to CHI: Grabovski
to TOR: CHI 1st, CHI 5th, Beach

And get laughed at by a habs fan (obviously still upset they lost grabo), but just wondering if that seems like fair value on both sides

I've been ranting about this for a long time..... I don't see any top end young players ready to make an impact in Detroit... Could certainly be wrong but don't think so. This team has been living off the drafting of a few guys for a decade and subsequently everyone seems to kiss Detroit's ass because they got lucky with Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Frazen...
