im not really goona argue, if we were in the playoffs for 20 years straight we'd be doing something right, so as good as you guys may think, or know how our drafts have been, we havnt made the playoffs in like what, 7 years...sooooo...your point is moot.

when you look at the names drafted...

Hudler, Howard, Franzen, Kronwall - these are all guys on the team and doing well. you have guys like Kindl, smith who are a year or 2 away from being nhl'ers...

over the years they have lost guys like Yzerman, Federov, Larionov, Hossa, Hull, Coffey, Ciccarelli and im sure a few others im missing.

you dont stick put in the playoffs for 20 years and win like 4 cups if you dont draft well, cmon dude. lol this is a ridiculous!

They got a few great guys from the drafts in the 90s that have kept them competitive, I'm not denying that.

but since that?

Kronwall 1st round

Howard- in the 2nd round of 2003.(only 2 teams failed to get anybody of note in the 1st two rounds)

And Franzen... a 24 year old, who wouldn't even be draftable under the current rules.

and then? Just a whole bunch of role-players.

You also mention a lot of players they've lost... Hull(they didn't draft him) Ciccarelli(they didn't draft him) Yzerman(pretty hard pick to screw up... and really, really long ago), Fedorov- great pick, but it helps that back then, nobody was looking at russians, Larionov(they didn't draft him), Hossa(they didn't draft him), Coffey(they didn't draft him)...

The fact is, the backbone of their team came from getting guys from places nobody else was looking. They don't have the advantage of being the only guys scouting europe anymore. Take away the guys they've drafted since Datsyuk, Lidstrom, and Zetterberg, and they're still making the playoffs year after year and challenging for the cup.

They're good at adding key players through free agency and trade... and with that they can build a good supporting staff around those big 3... but their drafting and development since getting those guys has been average at best.

Their strategy has been to go high-risk high-reward in the draft... and its just not paying off as much anymore.


When you say "We pulled a detroit", you're talking about getting a steal late, and outside of those big-3... they haven't gotten much more than supporting players outside of the top-60.
