I've been kicking around the idea of getting a projector for our basement... How are they with normal room lighting on?
- rival22

Normal lighting like the usual lamps? Or low level ambient lighting that makes general watching easier? Your basement probably doesn't get a ton of natural light (if any) so sorting out any lighting issue would be fairly simple--something as simple as 3 way lamps with a low watt bulbs for example.

The projector should probably be around 2000 lumens, minimum. The distance you have to "throw" the image to the screen may increase or decrease that number.

They're surprisingly good in normal room lighting...like the type of lighting you'd want to have during a hockey or football game!

I have 3 pot lights right in front on my wall where I project the image and when I have them at full intensity (they are on a dimmer), the image is obviously a little less colored (faded a bit). but if I lower it by just a quarter of the dimmer, the colors are nice on ECO mode and with the lowest setting brightness (cinema on my Epson 8350).
The fun part is that I can simply put a brightness/colour setting to "Living Room" (the 2nd highest setting on my Epson) and the colours are really great even in lots of light! Obviously i wouldn't want to watch everything in that setting as the bulb will die quicker and if the lights are not on or only halfway on the dimmer, the colours are too much...that setting is MADE for when you have all the lights on.

Check out www.projectorcentral.com, they really do their homework when it come to projectors and various settings... They had a full on review of the Epson 8350 I bought and they are bang on with everything!

My projector is set at about 20 feet I believe from the wall and I sit at about 16-17 feet from the wall. What is also great about this projector is that it has Lens Shift. You can put the projector way up high AND on the side but still have a perfectly formed projection free of distortion. This is needed for playing Wii and Kinect as you most of the time stand right in front of the wall/screen!

ive never been a big fan of oshie in the past, but after seeing him play with a different coach and with other top end talent, im starting to jump on the wagon. he would do awesome with the pens and a trade for him would do wonders for crosby. neal/malkin is becoming unseperable.

question for you, the masses....

Plasma or LED? I'm in the market for a new tube. I primarily watch sports and movies. The motion blur on the current LED we have with only a 60hz refresh rate is somewhat annoying. It's the only part of the ROOT broadcast I can't blame on them.

Is there a noticeable difference with the 120hz chip?

Thoughts? Anyone? Bueller?

So I was looking at the teams that are pretty far back in the standings and thought about some guys who might be available. Don't jump all over me I just don't want to talk about projectors and tv's. Ruutu (obviously we covered him) Gaustad, Paranteau, Moen, and Ryan Jones.

I have both, I would buy another Plasma again in a heartbeat. As much as I was under the impression LED and LCDs were better for gaming, once I got my plasma my xbox hasnt been hooked up to the other TVs since. FTR my LED and my LCD are Samsungs(40" and 46") and my Plasma is a Panasonic 50". Be glad to answer anymore questions you have--this is an area Im well versed in.

Thanks. I'm leaning toward Plasma. The newer ones don't seem to suffer the same limitations as some of the older models.

Pass on plasma. The best picture you get on a plasma is the day you buy the TV. Everyday past that the quality will lower over time. If you play video games it is a bad idea as well because if you leave it on a paused screen for lengths of time it can mess with the picture in rare cases. I think the 120hz chip should be sufficient.

Truthfully I use cnet.com for all of my technological inquiries. I always use that site before a major electronics purchase. Use the editor reviews, but also just as important check out the user reviews. I love that site.

Just fyi--that is an antiquated downfall of Plasma--akin to people still calling Crosby a whiner. My panasonic which I got 2 years ago came with a 100,000hr warranty against burn in. You would have to leave it on continually for over 11 years. With the way the technology is upgraded, I cant see keeping TVs for over 10 years(if that).
Id argue the opposite--it is better for gaming(I log a ridiculous amount of hours and have had ample time to figure out which I like better). The color transitions are smoother and colors in general render truer. I always hated the way games looked washed out on my Led and on my LCD no matter how I tweaked the settings.
Also, the Plasma(which has better specs than the LED or LCD--both are 1080p 240hz; Plasma is 1080p 600hz) was half the cost of the LED and LCD which ran close to 2k per. Plasma was around 1000-1100.

Thanks. Like I said...am leaning toward plasma and won't go bigger than 50 given the room size. The PS3 would be hooked up to it. You've had no issues?

One thing I have going is that the room doesn't get any direct sunlight. There are windows, but they face north, and their are wood blinds in them so it's easy to control the light during the day. No one is around to watching much during the daytime hours anyway except on weekends.

Given that most all of the new LED sets no longer have matted screens, any potential glare issue seemingly becomes a push.

I have a 42" Panasonic Plasma as well, have had it for 3 years and never had any problems. For what it is worth, Panasonic is the best brand for Plasma, which clearly seems to be evident by the comments of other Panasonic owners posting on here. Also have a 60" Mitsubishi DLP which I love and that is where my PS3 is hooked up. The big lug takes 20-30 seconds to warm up and turn on, but once it is going it is awesome.

I get to watch Ruutu regularly on TV and at the arena here in RDU. He would fit in well on the Pens. I'm not sure the price for him will be right though. He will likely garner a pretty decent haul on deadline day...nothing stupid like a 1st, a prime prospect, and a roster player, just probably more than Shero is willing to pay or perhaps can afford to give up.

You just described my living room all the way down to the wooden blinds.
Truth be told, I bought the plasma just to use as a Tv for the bedroom to watch Directv and nothing else. But once I set it up, I was so impressed at how it outperformed the other 2 Tvs that I took it to the living room and use it for everything now(it is the monitor for my computer tower, blu-ray hooked to it, directv box, and xbox). The LCD went to the bedroom. You may end up having different preferences but to give you some perspective on how much I use mine--Ive already logged 300+hrs into Skyrim. That doesnt count any of the time ive spent playing NHL 12, COD etc. I put my electronics through their paces.

Skyrim...my younger son bought that game right after Christmas. I'm only up to level 13... haha..

This is all good to know. Thanks! What connection/input did you use for your computer tower?

I run everything through my Onkyo(600 series) receiver via HDMI and run one HDMI into the TV. My tower has an HDMI out on the video card.
I had to stop playing Skyrim about 2 weeks ago because of quest glitches that are being fixed with the 1.4 patch due out in a week or so. I believe I was leveled into the 70s before I stopped playing.

Hmm who woulda thunk a hockey board would teach me about plasma tvs and how they have improved since the first ones came out.

dbell, Jones would be a interesting guy to target. I really don't know much about him or his game but that is def a new name to discuss.

Fortunately I have not had time to get into the glitches, I guess. I don't have any HDMI outputs on my receiver--a 6 year old Yamaha. That will be replaced eventually. The Panasonic model I'm looking at has 3 HDMI slots. That will be more than sufficient for now and a non-issue with a new receiver.

Speakers may come before the receiver. Tomorrow's topic? lol

Receivers: 2 brands to go with 1) Denon--top of the line but you are paying for the name 2) Onkyo--performance is awesome and are substantially cheaper than Denon without skimping on quality and features---I wouldnt buy anything but those 2 and as I stated I have the Onkyo(correction I have the 700series, not 600).
Speakers: 2 brands to go with 1)Bose--see Denon description above 2) Klipsch--see Onkyo description above. BUY YOUR SUB SEPARATELY!

Yamaha isnt horrible, I just dont think you are getting the best bang for your buck. Just like my Panasonic Plasma, I couldnt be more pleased with my setup(receiver and speakers). To each their own, just sharing my preferences and conclusions based on months of research and years of usage. I typically dont trust references from people because most individuals dont know what they are talking about--much like employees in the stores. I actually had a best buy employee trying to convince me that instead of using HDMI for video and audio that I would be better off using fiber optic for audio...I get a very sick/twisted sense of satisfaction from taking the geek squad to task for being clueless.
